TRIBUN-MEDAN.com, SIANTAR - The Secretary of the Pematangsiantar City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), L Amri Hasibuan SSTP, has named the Portugal National Team as his favourite to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to Amri, the Selecao das Quinas have shown significant growth over the past two years, supported by their achievements in various European tournaments.
Amri explained that with the strength Portugal currently possess, he believes they have what it takes to advance to the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He also predicted that Brazil could be their potential opponent in the ultimate match.
“If we look at the development of Portuguese players from 2006 to 2026, their quality has been consistently improving over the past 20 years. This can be seen from their market value, their presence in top European leagues, and the trophies they have collected,” Amri stated.
The Portugal National Team won the UEFA European Championship in France in 2016, followed by the UEFA Nations League title in 2018 and a third-place finish at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. As of 2026, several Portuguese players are also key members of top clubs competing in the UEFA Champions League final.
In addition to Portugal, Amri predicted that France, Argentina, and Brazil would reach the semifinals, with Portugal ultimately seizing the opportunity to win their first-ever World Cup title.
As for potential dark horses in 2026, Amri mentioned that he does not see any emerging teams or Asian representatives capable of sustaining a deep run in the tournament. He believes that Europe and South America continue to dominate world football.
“There are no clear dark horses yet. Even Japan, who have often stunned elite European teams, will likely face difficulties in a tournament of this magnitude,” Amri added.
