Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi has been fined nearly half a million euros in connection with the so-called ‘mystery box’ case. The Germany international has now broken his silence and publicly addressed the issue.
In the second episode of the new Amazon Prime documentary “Loredana & Karim – Love & Drama”, Adeyemi gives his own explosive version of events, explaining what led to the unusual misunderstanding that started with a seemingly harmless online purchase.
“Karim was on holiday and came with me to the *DSDS* shoot. I called Ben and asked him to pick up the parcels,” recalls Loredana, the wife of the Dortmund striker, in the documentary that revisits how the entire scandal began.
Ben, Adeyemi’s best friend, soon found himself under police inspection at the airport. What initially seemed like a simple errand quickly turned into a serious ordeal.
Unbeknownst to him, the luggage contained a balaclava, a switchblade, brass knuckles, and several smaller items. Ben recounts in the film: “I took the parcels to the airport just as they were. When the police officer opened them, I saw a balaclava, a switchblade, brass knuckles, and a few other things. I thought, ‘This can’t be right.’”
Adeyemi explained: “It was a hunting website—or something along those lines.”
The prohibited items were soon officially linked to the Borussia Dortmund player. The question then arose: how did a well-paid Bundesliga professional come into possession of weapons banned under German law?
Adeyemi maintains that there was no criminal intent behind it, asserting that the items came from what is known as a “mystery box”—a type of online order where the contents remain a surprise until opened.
“It was a box from a website where I already had an idea of what could be inside. It was a hunting site or something similar. It could include anything—from brass knuckles to a small pocket knife. It was a mystery box, so to speak,” the 24-year-old clarified.
The striker said his motivation stemmed from a desire to protect his wife, Loredana.
According to Adeyemi, his actions were driven by concern for his partner, who is a well-known rapper and often in the public eye. He admitted that his fear for her safety clouded his judgment at the time.
“If I’m alone and someone wants to attack me, fine—but not my family. People don’t get it; I don’t have a normal wife. My wife is a rapper. For me, anyone in the spotlight should be able to protect themselves,” he said. “My thought was: if I can order it online, it can’t possibly be illegal.”
However, Adeyemi ended up being fined €450,000.
The court dismissed his explanation outright. Under Germany’s stringent weapons laws, there is no legal loophole for items like switchblades or brass knuckles. As a result, the international footballer had to accept a substantial penalty amounting to more than 450,000 euros.
