The Indian team is going to tour the United Kingdom (UK) later this month. On the UK tour, Team India will first play a series of 2 T20 matches against Ireland. After this she will face England. There are to be a series of 5 T20 and 3 ODI matches between India and England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going to announce Team India for the UK tour today (June 4). According to media reports, BCCI has decided to remove Suryakumar Yadav from the captaincy of the T20 team. It is being claimed that not only will the captaincy be taken away from Surya, but he is also going to be dropped from the team.

Why is the sword hanging on Surya?

35 year old Surya has been struggling with poor form for a long time. He could not do anything special for Team India in the entire year 2025. Earlier this year, he had shown signs of returning to form by scoring 242 runs in the 5-match T20 series against New Zealand, but the edge of his bat became blunt again in the T20 World Cup. Surya had played an inning of 84 runs in the very first match against America. But after this he kept struggling to score runs. He scored 242 runs in 9 innings and during this his strike rate was only 136.72.

His bat did not work even in IPL 2026. He could score only 270 runs for Mumbai Indians in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and strike rate of 147.54. After continuous flops with the bat, now questions are being raised about his place in Team India. Surya has not done anything wrong in his captaincy. Even as a T20 captain, he has not lost any T20I series but due to being out of form for a long time, the sword is hanging over him.

Why does BCCI want to move forward?

Just a few months ago, Surya had won the T20 World Cup for Team India under his captaincy. Despite this, why is the captaincy being snatched from him? A big reason for this is his increasing age. He is going to turn 36 in September. The next ICC event is after 2 years. In such a situation, now BCCI wants to move ahead with him. The board also wants to send the message that looking towards the future, similar decisions will continue to be taken as it did with Rohit Sharma after the Champions Trophy win.

Surya’s name is not among the 30 players shortlisted by BCCI in January for the Asian Games to be held in September. The next global event is the Los Angeles Olympics, which will take place in 2028. Surya had set a target of winning an Olympic medal but now his dream seems to be shattered.
