Most people across the country prefer drinking sweet tea made with milk. However, many fitness enthusiasts prefer drinking their tea without milk or sugar. Some enjoy adding salt to their tea. Some even believe that tea with salt is beneficial for their health. This raises the question: if salt is added to tea—either in place of sugar or alongside it—what impact might it have on the body? Dr. Anil Bansal, a Senior Physician and former President of the Delhi Medical Association, explains that adding salt completely alters the taste of tea; instead of a sweet flavor, it acquires a salty profile. When weighing the pros and cons, he notes that there are no actual health benefits to adding salt to tea. In fact, if you are a frequent tea drinker and consistently add salt to your brew, it can be detrimental to your health. Excessive salt consumption can elevate sodium levels in the body, increasing the risk of high blood pressure and placing undue strain on the heart. Therefore, the habit of adding salt to one's daily tea is not considered beneficial.
The doctor further explains that if a person regularly consumes tea with salt, it can lead to elevated sodium levels in the body. High sodium intake is associated with various health issues, including high blood pressure, dehydration, and excessive strain on the kidneys. However, if you suffer from low blood pressure, adding a pinch of salt to your tea may be permissible. Nevertheless, one should generally avoid adding salt to one's daily tea routine. It is considered safer to consume tea in moderation and without sugar. Both excessively sweet and excessively salty teas can be harmful to one's health. Furthermore, it is advisable not to consume more than 2 to 3 cups of tea per day.
According to health experts, while adding salt to tea may offer a unique taste experience, it is not considered a safe practice from a health perspective. Tea prepared in the traditional manner—without excessive additives—remains the healthiest option for the body. Before turning any new experiment into a habit, it is essential to understand its health implications.
