Manchester City and Liverpool have moved into the lead to sign Hertha Berlin’s young sensation Kennet Eichhorn after Bundesliga powerhouses Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund withdrew their interest. Both German clubs have reportedly ended talks for the 16-year-old midfielder, citing steep financial demands from his representatives. This development places the two Premier League giants in a strong position to secure one of Europe’s most highly rated teenage players.

Bayern Munich end pursuit of Eichhorn

Hertha Berlin’s talented youngster Eichhorn is expected to leave the club this summer, but a transfer to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena now seems off the cards. Despite consistent interest from Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl, the Bavarian club has officially pulled out of the race, as per reports from Kicker. Although Eberl had been an advocate for the move and maintained regular communication with the player’s camp, the club’s leadership ultimately failed to reach a unified agreement.

Concerns within Bayern surfaced as early as January, when it became apparent that internal support for the deal had diminished. After further internal deliberations, Bayern reaffirmed their decision to prioritise developing their own youth academy prospects over investing heavily in Hertha’s promising midfielder.

Excessive financial demands stall negotiations

The major obstacle for Bayern was the enormous signing bonus requested by Eichhorn’s representatives. Reports indicate that the demanded handgeld, a double-digit million-euro figure, would surpass the transfer fee owed to Hertha Berlin itself. This financial arrangement shocked Bayern’s decision-makers, leading them to conclude that proceeding with the deal was not economically viable.

Borussia Dortmund faced similar concerns and have also stepped back, previously deeming the total package too costly. An exit clause reportedly worth up to €12 million is set to expire in June, putting pressure on German clubs to act swiftly. But with both Bayern and Dortmund now out of contention, the opportunity has opened up for financially stronger English clubs to move for the German teenager born in 2009.

Liverpool and Manchester City take the lead

The withdrawal of local competition has placed Manchester City and Liverpool in a commanding position. Both English sides are said to be undeterred by the rising price, viewing Eichhorn as a long-term investment. Although post-Brexit regulations would prevent the midfielder from officially playing in England before turning 18 in July 2027, both clubs are exploring ways to secure his transfer rights as early as this summer.

Unlike Bayern and Dortmund, who see the cost as prohibitive, City and Liverpool appear willing to meet a valuation close to €20 million. Their strategy involves signing Eichhorn now and loaning him out immediately to ensure his continued development at a competitive level. This forward-thinking approach has made a Premier League move far more likely than a stay in Germany.

Bayer Leverkusen could play a role

Another possible scenario could see Eichhorn remain in the Bundesliga through a “parking” arrangement with Bayer Leverkusen. Reports suggest Manchester City have discussed a plan to buy the youngster and loan him to Leverkusen for the upcoming season. This would give Eichhorn valuable first-team experience in Germany before making a future switch to the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool are believed to be considering a similar loan-back deal as part of their proposal. For Hertha Berlin, the situation remains fluid; while the club initially favoured a straightforward domestic transfer, the growing interest from England ensures they will still benefit from a significant financial return. The focus now turns to the Premier League title contenders, who are set to battle for one of the most exciting young footballers on the European stage.
