Move Aside Real Madrid and Liverpool – 86th-Ranked European Club Sends More Players to the 2026 World Cup

Crystal Palace has sent more players to the 2026 FIFA World Cup than both Real Madrid and Liverpool.

An unexpected twist has emerged as two of football’s biggest clubs, Real Madrid and Liverpool, no longer dominate the list of player contributors to national squads for the 2026 World Cup.

All 48 participating nations have confirmed their final squads ahead of FIFA’s registration deadline on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

The data reveals several intriguing insights, particularly concerning the club origins of the players heading to the tournament.

The Premier League and Manchester City top the list as the league and club providing the most players for the upcoming global event in North America.

A total of 162 players registered for the competition are from Premier League clubs, with 19 of them representing Manchester City.

Following City, the next four clubs supplying the most players are Bayern Munich (18), Arsenal (16), Paris Saint-Germain (14), and Barcelona (14).

An anomaly appears in sixth place — Crystal Palace stands alongside these football giants as one of the top contributors of players.

The London club has sent 12 players, a number equal to Atletico Madrid and Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia.

Palace’s contribution surpasses that of two elite clubs — Liverpool and Real Madrid — both multiple-time UEFA Champions League winners.

Liverpool has sent only 11 players, partly due to the absence of any of their stars in the England national team squad.

This marks the first time since the 1986 World Cup that Liverpool has had zero representatives in the Three Lions squad.

Real Madrid faces a similar situation regarding the Spanish national team.

After a disappointing domestic campaign, none of Real Madrid’s Spanish players were selected by national coach Luis de la Fuente for La Furia Roja.

Even more strikingly, this is the first time in history that Real Madrid has had no representatives in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Palace Earns Its Recognition

In total, Real Madrid has contributed only 10 players to the 2026 World Cup squads.

Historically, Crystal Palace cannot be compared with these football powerhouses.

The disparity is evident — The Eagles currently sit 86th in UEFA’s club coefficient rankings, while Real Madrid and Liverpool occupy second and fourth places, respectively.

In the Premier League, the South London club finished 15th in the 2025–2026 season standings.

However, Palace’s success — led by coach Oliver Glasner — in developing mid-tier players into top transfer market assets has made them an unexpectedly fertile talent base.

Their UEFA Conference League triumph, the club’s first-ever European trophy, underscored the squad’s quality and ambition.

The large number of Palace players called up for World Cup duty stands as recognition of their impressive achievements.

Crystal Palace’s representatives for the tournament include Maxence Lacroix, Jean-Philippe Mateta (France), Ismaila Sarr (Senegal), Jorgen Strand Larsen (Norway), Yeremy Pino (Spain), Dean Henderson (England), Chris Richards (USA), Evann Guessand (Ivory Coast), Daniel Munoz, Jefferson Lerma (Colombia), Chadi Riad (Morocco), and Daichi Kamada (Japan).

Meanwhile, several high-profile Real Madrid players are missing from the World Cup due to technical reasons or injuries.

Among them are Rodrygo, Eder Militao (Brazil), Eduardo Camavinga, Ferland Mendy (France), Trent Alexander-Arnold (England), and local players such as Gonzalo Garcia, Dani Carvajal, Dani Ceballos, Alvaro Carreras, Dean Huijsen, Fran Garcia, and Raul Asencio (Spain).
