Manchester United’s moves for Anderson and Baleba depend on Ugarte’s departure

Manchester United are aiming to replicate the success of last summer as they prepare for another crucial transfer window to strengthen their squad. The Red Devils not only improved their attacking and goalkeeping options last year but also trimmed their roster significantly by offloading several forwards.

The exits of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Rasmus Hojlund helped United clear out several underperforming players. This time, the club’s priority is to secure a successor for Casemiro, who is expected to leave as a free agent following an outstanding season.

Reports indicate that United have already reached an agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson as their first acquisition of the summer. The club is also planning to bring in another midfielder, with proven Premier League talent high on their recruitment list.

However, the club’s strategy also involves generating funds by selling players deemed surplus to requirements. One of those potentially on the way out is Manuel Ugarte, who has failed to establish himself at Old Trafford.

Ugarte was brought in from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) during the 2024 summer window as a long-term replacement for Casemiro. Ironically, it was Casemiro’s form that ultimately pushed the Uruguayan out of the starting lineup.

Ugarte’s stint in Manchester never really gained momentum. Signed under former manager Erik ten Hag, his fortunes dipped after the Dutchman’s exit later that year. Under new boss Ruben Amorim, the midfielder struggled to secure regular playing time, and his situation deteriorated further this season.

Even the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager in January failed to revive his prospects. Ugarte featured in only seven of Carrick’s 17 matches in charge, starting just once.

With Carrick now confirmed as the permanent manager and new midfield signings already planned, the 25-year-old appears set to leave. Reports suggest Turkish club Galatasaray are interested in offering him a fresh start, and United’s upcoming transfer activity could hinge on his exit.

According to the BBC, there is a growing belief within Old Trafford that Ugarte does not meet the required standard for the club. The report stated: “I also get the sense that if Manchester United could do a deal which would see Manuel Ugarte leave the club in some way, shape or form, then that would suit all parties.”

It further added, “People behind the scenes certainly feel that he isn’t quite up to it, and the reality is that he didn’t play any football from the home defeat to Leeds United right to the end of the season.”

The same report suggested that Ugarte’s departure could open the door for United to bring in players like Elliot Anderson or Carlos Baleba. It read: “Depending on how much money Manchester United can raise for him, they will then look to put it towards someone like Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson or Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.”

United continue to monitor Anderson closely, though recent developments indicate that Manchester City might currently be leading the race for his signature. Meanwhile, Baleba has been on the Red Devils’ radar since last summer, and a move remains possible this year.

As per a recent update shared by The Peoples Person, United are reportedly open to parting ways with Ugarte for around £24 million. Given his struggles to adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League, a transfer could benefit both the player and the club.
