Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been named the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season, with Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka narrowly missing out despite being considered one of the frontrunners for the honour.
Speaking to BBC Sport earlier this year, Xhaka reflected on his decision to return to English football, saying, “Even those closest to me were asking, ‘Why are you going back to the Premier League to join Sunderland?’ I came back because I love the challenge and felt I needed something new.”
The former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder was among a strong shortlist that included Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Arsenal’s title-winning forward Viktor Gyokeres, Chelsea attacker Joao Pedro, Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert, and Manchester City pair Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.
Lammens delivered an impressive debut season at Old Trafford, with the Belgian international keeping eight clean sheets in 32 Premier League appearances as Manchester United secured qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Xhaka’s contribution to Sunderland’s first season back in the top flight had made him a serious contender for the award. The Swiss international featured 34 times across all competitions, registering one goal and six assists, helping the Black Cats clinch a Europa League spot.
