Liverpool’s decision to target Andoni Iraola goes beyond simply appointing a replacement for Arne Slot. It represents an effort to reclaim a footballing identity that many fans feel has faded in recent seasons.
The move away from Slot marks a surprising twist, especially after his arrival as Jurgen Klopp’s successor. However, a disappointing season and a noticeable drop in energy and performance convinced the club’s leadership that a change was necessary.
Sporting director Richard Hughes believes Iraola fits the bill perfectly.
The connection between Hughes and Iraola is not new. Hughes played a key role in bringing the Spanish manager to Bournemouth in 2023 while serving as the club’s technical director. Three years later, Iraola leaves the south coast having guided Bournemouth to the most successful era in their history.
After officially announcing in April that he would leave at the end of the season, Iraola concluded his tenure with an impressive 18-match unbeaten run that secured a sixth-place finish and a first-ever European qualification for Bournemouth.
Iraola’s managerial journey has taken him from AEK Larnaca in Cyprus to Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano in Spain, before moving to England. Although his trophy collection remains modest—with the Cypriot Super Cup he won in 2018 as his only silverware—his reputation has been shaped by his ability to consistently exceed expectations.
At Bournemouth, he turned a mid-table side into one of the Premier League’s most dynamic and entertaining teams.
That transformation is precisely what Liverpool find appealing.
One of the major criticisms of Slot’s second and final season was that Liverpool had lost the signature traits that defined the Klopp era—intensity, aggression, and relentless pressing.
The atmosphere at Anfield grew tense as performances began to lack urgency and drive.
Former captain Steven Gerrard captured the sentiment recently, saying that Liverpool had not looked like themselves for much of the past two seasons.
Iraola’s football philosophy offers a path back to that identity.
The 43-year-old coach has built his career on high pressing, direct attacking play, and a fearless, aggressive approach. He once remarked that he prefers “chaos over organisation” and is a strong advocate of counter-pressing.
His teams focus on winning the ball high up the pitch and launching immediate attacks. Instead of slowing the tempo, they aim to sustain pressure and force opponents into errors.
This approach seems tailor-made for Anfield.
Liverpool fans have always embraced teams that play with intensity and commitment, and Iraola’s Bournemouth side embodied those qualities. They played with courage, energy, and an unrelenting drive that made them difficult opponents.
Liverpool’s current squad appears well-equipped to thrive under such a system. Players like Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch possess the technical ability and athleticism required for a high-energy setup.
The real challenge will be scaling Iraola’s methods to the demands of a top European club.
At Bournemouth, he often enjoyed a full week to prepare his team between matches. At Liverpool, however, he will have to navigate the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cups, frequently playing every three or four days.
Those familiar with Iraola describe him as a meticulous coach with an eye for detail and structure. Whether he can adapt his rituals and preparation to the relentless pace of elite football will be a critical factor in his success.
Nonetheless, Liverpool’s leadership clearly believes the potential rewards are worth the risk.
Iraola has improved every club he has led and consistently surpassed expectations. Hughes and Michael Edwards are confident that, with access to better players and greater resources, he can elevate Liverpool further.
Above all, they trust Iraola to reignite the intensity and passion that once made Liverpool one of Europe’s most feared teams.
