Was space available for a medical store earlier??
According to the old rules of the Railways, permission was given to open medicine shops at stations. In the year 2001, the Railway Board had decided that a maximum of 108 square feet space would be given for medical stores at stations where doctors are present. Whereas if a small medicine corner was made inside a book stall, then there was no such restriction of space for it. Simply put, earlier there was a rule to open separate medicine shops at stations.
Multi purpose stall started
With time, Railways changed its policies and now instead of opening separate medical stores at stations, the system of ‘Multi Purpose Stall’ (MPS) i.e. selling many types of goods at one shop is being promoted. Earlier, bookstalls, medical stores and general stores were separate, due to which a lot of space was occupied on the platform and passengers faced difficulty in walking. To reduce this congestion, Railways combined all these shops and made a single stall, where almost every item needed by the passengers is available at one place.
