Arsenal edge ahead of Bayern Munich in pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown as defender’s price tag proves too steep for Bundesliga champions

Arsenal have reportedly taken a significant lead in the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nathaniel Brown, overtaking Bayern Munich in the competition for his signature. The north London club appear better placed to meet the Bundesliga side’s high financial demands as they aim to strengthen their defensive lineup.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s steep valuation for Brown

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, the contest for Brown’s services is intensifying. However, Bayern Munich may have to withdraw from the chase due to financial constraints. Although the German champions have long admired the Frankfurt left-back, the financial aspects of the deal have proven to be a major obstacle for sporting director Max Eberl and the club’s management at the Allianz Arena.

Reports suggest that Eintracht Frankfurt are demanding a transfer fee in the region of €65 million for their emerging talent, according to Bild. This valuation is considered excessive for Bayern, who are navigating a tighter budget following several high-spending transfer windows. The Hessian club, fully aware of the 22-year-old’s potential, are insistent on securing a premium price and have no intention of selling him cheaply.

Arsenal enter the race for the German international

While Bayern hesitate, Arsenal have positioned themselves as strong contenders for Brown’s signature. The Premier League club is eager to enhance its options on the left flank, and the German international fits perfectly into the attacking full-back profile that manager Mikel Arteta favours. Unlike their German rivals, Arsenal are believed to possess the financial capacity to meet Frankfurt’s valuation.

As reported by The Athletic, Brown is one of several top-tier defensive targets under Arsenal’s watch. His combination of attacking flair and defensive work rate makes him an ideal fit for the intensity of the Premier League. Brown’s impressive 2025-2026 campaign with Frankfurt — during which he made 42 appearances across all competitions, scoring four times and registering six assists — has only boosted his reputation. Despite his strong performances, Frankfurt ended the season eighth in the Bundesliga, missing out on European football. For Brown, a move to Arsenal, a club consistently competing at the top of English football, presents an appealing opportunity.

Bayern’s transfer conundrum and potential exits

Bayern Munich’s situation is complicated by their current defensive depth. To launch a serious bid for another left-back, the club would likely need to offload some existing players. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt stand to make a substantial profit from any sale. Having acquired Brown from Nurnberg in January 2024 for around €3 million, a potential sale this summer could bring in a massive financial return. Nevertheless, Bayern’s ability to move forward depends on successfully completing player sales before pursuing new signings.

Reports indicate that Max Eberl may need to part ways with either Hiroki Ito or Alphonso Davies before sanctioning a move for Brown. Without these departures, the €60–65 million required for the Frankfurt defender remains beyond Bayern’s financial reach.

Nagelsmann praises Brown’s rapid rise

Brown’s growing prominence has been further enhanced by his involvement with the German national team under coach Julian Nagelsmann. Preparing for the 2026 World Cup, the young full-back has impressed with his adaptability and tactical understanding. His standout performance in a recent friendly against Finland has even placed him in contention for a starting spot on the left side of defence.

Nagelsmann has not hidden his admiration for Brown, saying, “He has a lot of potential, is excellent in one-on-one situations, very fast, intelligent in his positioning, and feels comfortable operating in the half-spaces.”

The coach further highlighted that the competition between Brown and David Raum is beneficial for the national side, noting, “They are both high-quality players with different styles, and either could start depending on the match.”
