London: A British parliamentarian has sparked controversy after he made anti-migrant remarks against Indian and Pakistani immigrants despite the risk of being labelled as racist. He pointed out that the UK must not import millions of Pakistanis and Indians for jobs
Taking to X, Independent UK MP Rupert Low wrote, “I don’t believe we should import millions of Pakistanis and Indians to do jobs that unemployed Brits should be doing. If that makes me racist, then so be it.”
Low constituencies consist of 907 Indian and Pakistani immigrantsNotably, as per the 2021 Census by the Office for National Statistics, Lowe’s constituency of Great Yarmouth consists of only 907 residents of Indian and Pakistani origin out of a population of nearly 1 lakh, which means it accounts for below 1 percent of the constituency’s population. Notably, Great Yarmouth’s unemployment rate stood at 9.8 percent, which was more than the national average of 5.4 percent in the UK.
As per the data released by the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, migrant workers in the country are mostly employed in sectors that have labour crunches. Notably, non-UK nationals held 20 percent of employee jobs in December 2025, which meant 6.5 million jobs. This increased from 12 percent in 2014.
Migrants employed in various sectorsImportantly, a large number of non-EU migrant workers have been employed across the UK in the health and care sector. The shortage of staff in these sectors has led the UK government to expand visa eligibility for workers from abroad.
Earlier, Lowe faced criticism over his comments on immigration. Last year in December, he posted on X, saying Britain “was built by British men and women.” He dismissed the role played by immigrants in the country’s development.
