New Delhi: Just three months after making India the champion on home soil in the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav has been stripped of the captaincy. Not only this, now his place in the playing eleven is also not considered confirmed. This big decision has come just before the tour of Ireland and England.
New captain for the new era
BCCI, Team Management and Selection Committee, after discussion with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that now the team will move ahead with the new captain. Actually, the Indian team will first play two T20 matches in Ireland. After this there will be a five-match T20 series in England.
Meanwhile, a senior BCCI official told ‘The Indian Express’, "We won the T20 World Cup under Surya’s captaincy, but considering his current form and future, a change was necessary. The selection committee, board and team management are unanimous that now is the time to move forward."
Bad form became a big reason
Suryakumar’s batting has been a matter of constant concern for the last two years. The 2026 IPL season was also very bad for him. Finished the season with a fifty against Rajasthan Royals, but scored only 270 runs in 13 innings. During this period his average was only 20.76.
Even after India won the third T20 World Cup in March, questions continued to be raised on his batting. Rohit Sharma retired from this format after the World Cup victory in West Indies in 2024. Then Surya was given the command of the T20 team.
How was your record as captain?
Under Surya’s captaincy, India won the 2025 Asia Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup. Apart from this, he was also a part of the team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2023 Asia Cup.
Identification of the batsman who scores fast runs
Suryakumar has always been considered an explosive batsman. While batting at number 3 or 4, he used to turn the match with his unique shots. His biggest strength was his ability to score faster runs than other batsmen even under pressure. But this is before October 2024.
After his fifty against Bangladesh on 12 October 2024, his next 50 plus score came against New Zealand on 23 January 2026. Two more half-centuries were scored in the same series.
This was India’s last T20I series before the 2026 T20 World Cup and Surya’s form had given hope. In the World Cup, he started with an unbeaten inning of 84 runs against USA, but after that he could not maintain the rhythm.
