Salford City co-owners David Beckham and Gary Neville have made a bold move by dismissing head coach Karl Robinson, even after the club enjoyed their best-ever season. Despite guiding the Ammies to their highest league finish and a memorable trip to Wembley, the former MK Dons and Oxford United manager has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
End of Robinson’s tenure after Wembley heartbreak
In a decision that has stunned followers across the English Football League, Salford City confirmed Robinson’s exit. The 45-year-old could not survive the aftermath of a crushing 3-0 loss to Notts County in the League Two play-off final at Wembley, a defeat that left the club’s high-profile owners visibly exasperated in the stands.
The club’s official statement read: “Karl Robinson has left his position as Head Coach of Salford City with immediate effect. Karl has conducted himself with professionalism and integrity throughout his time at the club. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of Salford City and shown complete commitment to helping us achieve our goals, both on and off the field. We wish Karl every success in his future endeavours.”
Record-breaking campaign fails to secure job
Robinson’s departure comes as a surprise to many, given the team’s impressive progress this season. Under his management, Salford achieved their best-ever finish in English football, ending the campaign fourth in League Two. However, they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion by just one point to Cambridge United, forcing them into the play-offs where they ultimately fell short.
During his two-and-a-half years in charge, Robinson oversaw 132 matches and secured 60 wins. Having taken over a side languishing in 20th place, he stabilised the team and turned them into genuine promotion contenders. Yet, a poor run of five defeats in six games during January proved pivotal in derailing automatic promotion hopes.
Robinson’s final words as manager
After the Wembley defeat, Robinson spoke candidly about the team’s performance. Reflecting on the loss, he said: “I feel that we’ve let people down. I don’t think we’ve let people down for the last 10 months—we’ve been nothing short of magnificent—but today too many players didn’t show up. You can make many excuses, but we were beaten by the better team.”
Despite his “magnificent” efforts over the past 10 months, Robinson’s achievements were not enough to keep his job. Beckham and Neville appear determined to accelerate Salford’s rise into League One, and the frustration from the final-day draw against 22nd-placed Crawley Town seems to have influenced the boardroom’s decision.
The road ahead for the Ammies
Salford City now face the task of finding a new head coach capable of turning play-off contenders into promotion winners. Since their promotion from the National League in 2019, the club has established itself as a competitive League Two side, but the ownership group clearly believes a new direction is required to take the next step.
With pre-season just around the corner, the pressure is on the Class of ’92 to appoint a successor who can handle the intense scrutiny that comes with the job. Robinson’s departure closes a steady chapter for the club, but for Beckham and Neville, only promotion to League One will meet their long-term ambitions for the Moor Lane outfit.
