Michael Carrick’s team is set for a major overhaul this summer, with plans underway to strengthen all departments across the pitch.
Manchester United are on the verge of signing Brazilian midfielder Ederson as a replacement for the departing Casemiro, signalling the start of a major rebuild at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils concluded the 2025/26 Premier League season in third place — a remarkable turnaround from their previous campaign, where they finished 15th and lost in the Europa League final.
Under Carrick’s management, United improved their points tally by 29 this season, competing solely in domestic competitions after missing out on European football the year before.
With Champions League football secured for next season, reports indicate that Manchester United have agreed a £35 million deal to sign Atalanta’s Ederson, with performance-related add-ons potentially taking the total to nearly £40 million.
The Brazilian midfielder, who has earned three senior caps for his country, is understood to have signed a four-year contract with United, including an option for a one-year extension.
Ederson will be the first new arrival since Michael Carrick was confirmed as the club’s permanent manager, and further additions in midfield are expected over the course of the summer transfer window.
Midfield reinforcements have been a long-standing priority for United, particularly with Casemiro’s departure creating a significant void in the squad.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Manchester United are planning more midfield signings, with Manuel Ugarte also expected to leave the club this summer.
“And don’t forget that this is just the first one for Manchester United. They will do many other things on the market,” Romano clarified.
Ederson was not included in Brazil’s 26-man national squad, giving him an extended break before he begins preparations for the upcoming Premier League season.
During the last Serie A campaign, the Atalanta midfielder started 26 of the team’s 38 league matches, playing a key role in helping them qualify for the UEFA Conference League.
He is expected to be the first of up to three midfield signings for Manchester United ahead of their 2026/27 Premier League campaign, with the club also pursuing Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson as part of their ongoing recruitment drive.
