Could Jude Bellingham one day wear the Liverpool red? Club legend Robbie Fowler believes it’s possible, telling GOAL that a Premier League switch might happen in the future while also outlining areas where the England midfielder can still refine his game. The energetic 22-year-old remains a key player for Real Madrid, but a return to England could be on the cards once his spell in Spain concludes.
From Birmingham beginnings to Madrid stardom
Bellingham, a product of Birmingham City’s academy, made his senior debut in the West Midlands at just 16. In the summer of 2020, he made a bold move to Borussia Dortmund in Germany, stepping out of his comfort zone to continue his rapid development.
That decision paid off handsomely, leading to a €103 million (£89m/$120m) transfer to Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu in 2023. The stylish playmaker has seamlessly fitted in among Madrid’s ‘Galacticos’, quickly rising into contention for the Ballon d’Or.
However, injuries have somewhat disrupted his progress over the past two seasons, with major trophies proving elusive. Some have even questioned whether Bellingham’s starting spot for England remains assured, as other talents like Morgan Rogers push hard for the No.10 role.
Determined to silence critics, as he has done throughout his young career, Bellingham could eventually look to reignite his journey back on home soil. Ambitious Premier League clubs would certainly be keen to bring in a proven UEFA Champions League winner.
Could Bellingham end up at Anfield?
When asked whether Bellingham could make his way to the Premier League — and perhaps to Liverpool — club legend Robbie Fowler, speaking exclusively to GOAL on behalf of BetMGM, shared his views: “I want to see good players at Anfield, so I’d love to see him there.”
He continued, “The Premier League is considered the best league in the world, but right now he’s playing for one of the greatest clubs in the world — Real Madrid. So, I don’t think he’s eager to return to England just yet.”
“That’s not to say it couldn’t happen in three, four, or five years’ time. With how football works today and the nature of long contracts, you wouldn’t be surprised if a move materialised eventually. If he’s not playing for Madrid or another top European side, the Premier League is definitely the place to be. As a Liverpool fan, of course, you want to see great players, and he certainly fits that category.”
Where Bellingham can still improve
For now, Bellingham’s focus remains firmly on international duty, as England eye World Cup glory in North America this summer — a chance to end 60 years of heartbreak.
How central a role he plays in that campaign will depend on manager Thomas Tuchel’s selection calls. When asked what part of Bellingham’s game still has room for improvement, Fowler said: “When I watch him, I see a hugely gifted player. He’s obviously talented because of where he plays and the calibre of teams he’s represented.”
Fowler added, “He’s been exceptional from his Birmingham days, then outstanding at Dortmund, and now he’s earned a place at one of the world’s biggest clubs, Madrid. Everyone talks about how positive he is going forward.”
“But from my perspective, he sometimes lacks consistency — doing it game after game. Perhaps he needs a bit more discipline. When an England manager asks you to push forward, he also wants you to track back quickly. I think Jude sometimes drives forward faster than he recovers. That’s an area that could use a little more balance. Going forward, he’s brilliant — we all know that — but the consistency and discipline in defensive transitions could be improved.”
Bellingham’s sights set on World Cup success
With just four more appearances needed to reach 50 caps for England, Bellingham’s immediate attention is on international football. He remains under contract with Real Madrid until 2029, giving him stability while he continues to collect accolades.
Having already achieved so much in Spain, Bellingham might one day weigh up a Premier League return if the right offers come his way. Should that happen, he’ll hope to do so as a World Cup winner — a feat that would further cement his place among the game’s elite.
