Manchester United are reportedly edging nearer to securing a significant financial gain following reports that AS Roma are interested in signing Mason Greenwood from Marseille.
During his time at Manchester United, the 24-year-old forward was suspended by the club on January 30, 2022, after allegations emerged involving a young woman when images and videos were circulated online.
He was charged with attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February 2023 that the case had been dropped.
Greenwood eventually departed Old Trafford in July 2024, joining Marseille in a deal worth €31.6 million, with Manchester United retaining a 50 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Since moving to France, Greenwood has delivered strong performances, registering 21 goals and five assists in 34 Ligue 1 appearances last season.
The Manchester United academy graduate has continued that form into the 2025/26 campaign, scoring 21 goals and contributing eight assists in 42 matches across all competitions for Marseille.
Although there had been speculation that Manchester United might consider bringing Greenwood back to the club following his resurgence, that scenario now appears increasingly improbable.
Nevertheless, the Premier League side are poised to benefit financially from any move this summer, owing to the 50 per cent sell-on clause included in their deal with Marseille.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Serie A side Roma are expected to make ‘initial contact’ with Marseille in the coming days as they explore the feasibility of a summer transfer for Greenwood.
Despite Marseille setting a steep asking price, aware that half of the fee will go to Manchester United, Roma are reportedly ready to ‘push hard’ to secure the English forward.
Di Marzio stated: “Roma have identified Mason Greenwood as their top target. He is Gian Piero Gasperini’s first-choice signing, and initial discussions with Olympique de Marseille are expected soon to assess the practicality of the deal and the financial terms.”
He further noted: “The initial asking price for the English striker is in excess of €50 million, but Roma remain determined to move forward. This season, Greenwood has featured in 45 matches for the French club, netting 26 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions.”
Meanwhile, according to The Metro, Manchester United — now under the permanent management of Michael Carrick — have placed three players on the transfer list ahead of the upcoming summer window.
Drawing from several reports, it is believed that Manchester United are prepared to part ways with Manuel Ugarte in the coming weeks, though the club may struggle to recover the £50 million they paid Paris Saint-Germain for his signing.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is set to return for pre-season training, is also not part of Carrick’s long-term plans, with Turkish side Trabzonspor — where he spent last season on loan — showing renewed interest in acquiring him permanently.
Additionally, Manchester United are reportedly open to selling Joshua Zirkzee, whose output in terms of goals and assists since arriving from Bologna has failed to meet expectations, with multiple Serie A clubs monitoring his situation.
