Manchester United great Paul Scholes has expressed his belief that Marcus Rashford would be an ideal signing for Arsenal. The Red Devils are reportedly ready to sell the England international, who spent the previous season on loan at Barcelona.
Rashford rose to prominence in Manchester United’s first team under Louis van Gaal during the 2015/16 season. However, his fortunes changed after Ruben Amorim took charge at Old Trafford in November 2024, with the Portuguese manager struggling to maintain a positive relationship with the forward.
Amorim’s strained rapport with Rashford eventually led to the player being loaned out to Aston Villa in January 2025. Despite a strong showing at Villa Park, the situation at United did not improve, and Rashford secured another loan move—this time to Barcelona.
The 28-year-old was a standout performer for the LaLiga champions last season, tallying 14 goals and 14 assists to help the Catalan side clinch both the league title and the Supercopa de Espana. Despite his stellar performances, Barcelona are yet to activate their €30 million option to buy him permanently.
Although reports suggest that Barcelona might attempt to negotiate a lower transfer fee, Rashford’s long-term future remains uncertain heading into the summer window. The England forward, however, continues to attract interest from several top clubs.
In his Premier League career so far, Rashford has netted 89 goals and provided 42 assists in 297 appearances, making him a highly sought-after player in the English top flight.
Recent speculation has linked Chelsea and Arsenal as potential destinations, though Newcastle United are said to have stepped back from pursuing the player. Arsenal, who are looking to bolster their attacking options following a painful loss to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League final, are reportedly keeping a close eye on Rashford.
Given Rashford’s proven record in the Premier League, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is believed to view him as a valuable addition to his squad. Scholes has now shared his thoughts regarding such a move.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Ugly podcast, Scholes was asked about Arsenal’s interest in the United forward. He commented, “That would be a great move, a great move for both parties. I think Arsenal would be a great move for him and the club.”
Meanwhile, Amorim’s exit and the appointment of Michael Carrick as United’s new manager have sparked rumours about Rashford potentially returning to Old Trafford. Rashford worked closely with Carrick during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure, adding fuel to talk of a reunion.
However, Scholes believes a return is unlikely, saying, “No, it very rarely happens, a big player like that going to a big club and then coming back. They very rarely come back and I don’t think United will really want him back.”
Manchester United are reportedly hesitant to strengthen a direct Premier League rival by allowing Rashford to join Arsenal. On the other hand, the forward is said to prefer a permanent move to Camp Nou, which could heavily influence the outcome of his transfer saga.
According to a recent report, United are now willing to accept Barcelona’s revised bid for Rashford, which could finally bring closure to the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
