England midfielder Jordan Henderson has come forward to defend head coach Thomas Tuchel’s decisions regarding his 26-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions have now arrived in Florida, where they are holding a warm-up camp as preparations intensify ahead of the global tournament. However, several high-profile players have been left out of the travelling group. Among the notable omissions are Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and a few other star names.
“I know everyone likes to talk about the players who didn’t make it,” Henderson acknowledged. “Unfortunately, that’s something that happens with every England squad. There’s so much talent, so many quality players.”
He added, “But for those of us who are here, it’s all about unity. We’re here for a reason.”
Despite making only seven starts for Brentford during the latter half of the Premier League season, Henderson earned a place in Tuchel’s final selection. The 35-year-old is set to feature in his fourth World Cup, and Tuchel clearly values his leadership and experience within the team.
Expanding on his role, Henderson said, “It’s about bringing that energy – being the best version of yourself, both individually and as a squad.”
“We’ve got to work every day towards achieving our dreams, and that means giving our all each day.”
“We need to be ready to sacrifice for each other, to do all the unseen work, as the manager often says, and to support one another fully.”
“We all know the quality this team has, what we’re capable of, and how dangerous we can be against any opponent.”
“It’s definitely exciting, but we know there’s a lot of hard work ahead. We’re just eager to get started,” he concluded.
