SIDRAP — The Argentina national team continues to be one of the most eagerly awaited sides every time the FIFA World Cup takes place.
The triumph of La Albiceleste at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar under coach Lionel Scaloni has kept the passion for Argentina alive across many regions, including Sidrap Regency.
One of Argentina’s devoted supporters in Sidrap is the Head of the Sidrap Transportation Department, Andi Bahari Parawansa.
He admits that he still deeply admires the brilliance of the football legend Lionel Messi.
For many years, Messi has been a global football icon.
According to Andi Bahari, Messi’s presence is the main reason he continues to back Argentina in every major tournament.
“I support Argentina because of Lionel Messi. His style of play, vision, and contribution on the pitch are always fascinating to watch. I hope Messi can still lead Argentina to stay competitive and achieve great success again at the 2026 World Cup,” said Andi Bahari on Wednesday (3 June 2026).
Andi Bahari’s love for football, especially the World Cup, has grown since his college years at Hasanuddin University.
He recalled how people at that time would gather together to watch matches because not everyone had access to a television at home.
“When I was a student, every time the World Cup was on, we would look for a place with a television to watch together. The atmosphere was so different back then. There was a strong sense of togetherness,” he told Tribun-Timur.com on Wednesday (3 June 2026).
“Even though each of us supported different teams, we all enjoyed the matches with great excitement. Those moments still remain in my memory,” he added.
As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Andi Bahari hopes that the local government will provide public viewing facilities for the community.
He believes that football has the power to strengthen social ties and create shared spaces for people from all walks of life.
“I hope there will be public viewing facilities accessible to residents, such as at the Regent’s Official Residence,” he stated.
“The World Cup is not only about football; it is also a means to foster friendship, strengthen unity, and bring collective joy to the people of Sidrap,” he concluded.
The 2026 World Cup will officially kick off on Thursday (11 June 2026) at the Mexico City Stadium (Estadio Azteca) in Mexico.
The opening match will feature hosts Mexico against South Africa in Group A.
