Indian Railways: While traveling by train, food, beverages, and other daily necessities are easily available at stations; however, medical stores are rarely seen. Why are there no pharmacies at railway stations?

Indian Railways: Almost everyone has traveled by train, and most are aware that railway stations offer a wide range of amenities—from food and drinks to books—that are easily accessible. But have you ever wondered why medical stores are so scarce on the platforms? Why, exactly, are there no dedicated pharmacies at railway stations? If you, too, are unaware of the reason behind this, let us explain it to you today.

Space Used to Be Allotted for Medical Stores

It is worth noting that, according to the Railways’ older regulations, permission was indeed granted to open chemist shops—or medical stores—at stations. In 2001, the Railway Board stated that for stations equipped with medical facilities (doctors), a maximum space of 108 square feet would be deemed sufficient for a chemist stall. However, if a small “medicine corner” was established within an existing bookstore, this specific space restriction did not apply. In other words, a system for opening pharmacies at railway stations did exist in the past.

The Rules Have Now Changed

Over time, the Railways revised its policy. Instead of allocating space for standalone medical stores, the focus has now shifted to promoting “Multi-Purpose Stalls” (MPS) at stations. In the past, railway stations featured separate stalls for books, medicines, and general merchandise.

This arrangement occupied a significant amount of space on the platforms, causing considerable inconvenience to passengers moving around the station. This is precisely why the Railways introduced the concept of Multi-Purpose Stalls by consolidating these various shops. Now, a wide variety of goods and items are made available at a single location within these stalls.

Are Medicines Available at These Stalls?

MPS stalls are permitted to sell common over-the-counter medicines that do not require a doctor’s prescription. However, space is no longer allocated exclusively for the purpose of opening a standalone medical store. In addition, the government is also working towards establishing ‘Jan Aushadhi Kendras’ (generic medicine centers) at several railway stations. Meanwhile, efforts to enhance healthcare facilities at major railway stations are ongoing.

At how many stations are medical stores currently available?

According to the Railways, there are currently only 21 railway stations across the country where dedicated medical stores are operational.

What to do in an emergency?

If a passenger suddenly falls ill while traveling, the Railways provide a range of facilities to assist them. To this end, TTEs, Train Guards, Train Superintendents, and Station Masters receive training in providing first aid. Furthermore, lists of nearby hospitals and doctors—along with their contact numbers—are made available at all railway stations. Passengers can seek their assistance should the need arise. Additionally, medical kits are provided at railway stations and on trains to ensure that immediate assistance is available during emergencies.
