Following the weekend’s announcement that Arne Slot will depart Liverpool, the club has wasted no time in identifying and securing his replacement, signalling a major shift in direction for the Anfield hierarchy.
This move reflects a clear change in Liverpool’s strategic approach, as the board appears to have responded to fan pressure by parting ways with Slot and reinstating a more proactive, high-intensity style of play described as ‘front-foot, aggressive and urgent’.
Virtually everything that could have gone wrong did so for Liverpool during the 2025/26 season. Slot, now the former head coach, has been widely blamed for the Reds’ disappointing Premier League title defence, with his conservative tactics leaving him unable to recover from an increasingly untenable position.
The shadow of Jurgen Klopp and his famous ‘heavy-metal football’ loomed large over Slot’s tenure. However, Andoni Iraola’s impressive work at Bournemouth suggests he may be far better suited to delivering the kind of dynamic football Liverpool fans demand.
After leading Bournemouth to European qualification, Iraola has earned his chance at a top club. His arrival should at least ensure Liverpool are more entertaining next season. Nevertheless, the Basque coach’s credentials will be tested as he adapts his energetic system to the demands of three matches per week. Consistency will be vital, as his Bournemouth side were often streaky under pressure.
Given last summer’s flawed £450m rebuild, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) will likely need to authorise another major outlay in this transfer window to give Iraola the best possible foundation for success at Anfield.
With a new report highlighting Liverpool’s five primary transfer targets for the summer, it’s now possible to project what Iraola’s preferred starting XI could look like in a 4-3-2-1 setup next season.
Starting in goal, Alisson Becker is expected to retain the No.1 jersey after Liverpool blocked his planned move to Juventus. Whether or not he desired the transfer, Alisson remains a world-class goalkeeper, still ahead of Giorgi Mamardashvili in terms of quality and reliability.
At left-back, Milos Kerkez appears set for an extended run in the side following Andy Robertson’s free transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. Kerkez could benefit significantly from reuniting with a manager who understands his strengths, something Slot failed to do.
In central defence, change is inevitable after the struggles of Ibrahima Konate during the 2025/26 season. New signing Jeremy Jacquet—already among the priciest additions of the summer—is likely to partner captain Virgil van Dijk, with Giovanni Leoni providing rotational depth.
Right-back remains a concern, as Conor Bradley’s injury and Jeremie Frimpong’s limitations in the Premier League have left the position vulnerable. Denzel Dumfries is off the table, with the Dutchman set to join Real Madrid from Inter Milan.
Instead, reports from Planet Football suggest Liverpool could pursue Brentford’s Michael Kayode, valued at around £34m. His pace, athleticism, and relentless work rate make him a strong fit for Iraola’s system.
In midfield, Dominik Szoboszlai—Liverpool’s 2025/26 Player of the Season—should be one of the first names on the team sheet. However, his partner in central midfield might change.
Links to £80m-rated Adam Wharton persist, and his technical skillset could perfectly complement Szoboszlai’s dynamism. Such a pairing would reinvigorate Liverpool’s midfield, while Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Curtis Jones could be pushed to the fringes or sold to raise funds.
Those potential departures could help Liverpool inject fresh energy into the wide areas. The club is reportedly considering an £86m move for Yan Diomande as a possible successor to Mohamed Salah.
Another option being explored is PSG’s Bradley Barcola, though it appears unlikely the Reds will sign both players. Whichever winger arrives would likely join last summer’s marquee signings in Iraola’s new-look starting XI.
Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak are both expected to improve after a mixed debut campaign, while Hugo Ekitike could be deployed on the left wing to accommodate both him and Isak in the same lineup.
All told, Liverpool’s reimagined lineup under Iraola—backed by a potential £200m transfer investment—should deliver the attacking flair and intensity fans have long been craving.
