Rieka. Belgium secured an impressive 2-0 win over hosts Croatia in a friendly fixture on Tuesday, organised as part of their build-up for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Belgium’s star forward Romelu Lukaku made a much-anticipated comeback to the national side, marking his return with his record 90th international goal. This match was Lukaku’s first appearance for Belgium in nearly a year.
Captain Youri Tielemans opened the scoring for Belgium, taking full advantage of a defensive lapse by Croatia in the 38th minute to slot the ball home from close range. The goal followed a dazzling attacking move initiated by Jeremy Doku.
Both teams opted for multiple substitutions after the break. Belgium introduced eight new players, while Croatia made ten changes. Lukaku was brought on for the final 18 minutes and found the net with a powerful strike in the closing moments of the game.
The 33-year-old Lukaku returns to international duty after a difficult club season with Napoli, where he failed to cement his place in the starting lineup and was hampered by a hamstring injury.
Belgium’s Hans Vanaken came close to scoring in the second half with a header that struck the crossbar, while Croatia’s Ante Budimir and Luka Modric were unable to convert their chances.
Croatia will next face Slovenia in another preparatory match, whereas Belgium are set to take on Tunisia in their upcoming friendly encounter.
Belgium will kick off their World Cup campaign against Egypt on June 15, while Croatia will open against England on June 17.
