In the latest Serie A developments, Napoli has made a move to secure AC Milan’s primary target for Massimiliano Allegri after a period of uncertainty.
Earlier this summer, AC Milan had been strongly linked with Lazio defender Mario Gila.
However, it now appears increasingly unlikely that the player will be joining the club from San Siro.
Gila’s name had been one of the most frequently mentioned ahead of the transfer window opening.
Direct talks with Lazio had already taken place, and it seemed that an agreement was only a matter of time, not a question of possibility.
Yet, that no longer seems to be the case.
Gila Slips Away
According to Daniele Longo, following the dismissal of Igli Tare in last week’s restructuring, the deal for Gila has slowed significantly, creating an opportunity for Napoli to intervene.
Giovanni Manna has reportedly taken advantage of the situation and is now directly involved in negotiations.
A deal valued at around 25–30 million euros is currently being discussed, raising questions over whether the Rossoneri can afford such an investment without Champions League football.
As a result, AC Milan may no longer be in pole position for the transfer.
“Gila’s contract runs until 2027, with one more year remaining. Lazio is determined to keep Mario Gila at all costs, even at the risk of losing him for free. The club is adamant about rejecting offers,” the report stated.
“Meanwhile, Napoli has been considering Gila even before the managerial change, before Antonio Conte informed Aurelio De Laurentiis.”
“For the player himself, the idea of joining Napoli and playing in the Champions League is an appealing prospect.”
“Max Allegri is a big admirer, and there is a shared consensus on Gila.”
“He would not require much time to adapt to Napoli’s project.”
“He is a name widely supported within Napoli.”
“He has also been on AC Milan’s radar for quite some time, but dealing with Milan’s management and coach requires patience.”
“Until a few weeks ago, AC Milan had been monitoring Mario Gila for a long time but never came close to finalizing a deal.”
“Napoli is now carrying out its evaluations.”
Rafael Leao Not Alone as Several AC Milan Stars Plan to Leave
The Rossoneri could be facing a major exodus next season.
AC Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, combined with management turmoil, could lead to the departure of several key players.
Recently, Rafael Leao has been the first to openly declare his intention to leave.
After seven years, the Portuguese forward admitted he is seeking a change of environment and is looking for a club in another league.
His comments sounded like a farewell message following a difficult season, one that also saw a breakdown in his relationship with fans.
Leao has been heavily criticised in recent months and has become a symbol of the club’s disappointing campaign.
Club owner Gerry Cardinale was reportedly the first to put him on the transfer list after expressing his wish to offload him.
Leao responded sharply, further fuelling speculation about his exit.
The Portuguese winger is currently exploring options abroad, with AC Milan demanding at least 50 million euros for his transfer.
Offers have reportedly come in from Turkey, with Galatasaray and Fenerbahce leading the race.
Both clubs are offering high wages of around 10 million euros net per year.
However, the former Lille player prefers to wait for offers from the Premier League.
His dream is to play for a top English club, and he plans to use the upcoming World Cup as a platform to attract interest.
A move to Saudi Arabia appears far less likely, while Barcelona remains one of the interested clubs in Spain.
Other Departures Expected
Rafael Leao is not the only player considering a move away.
Luka Modric’s future also appears uncertain.
The Croatian midfielder is reportedly disappointed with how the season ended and is reevaluating his options.
His contract expires at the end of June, and he may stay only if Massimiliano Allegri remains in charge.
Currently, he finds himself without Champions League football and without a coach or sporting director like Igli Tare, who had personally requested his arrival at AC Milan.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has tried to convince him to stay, but Modric is still hesitant.
Adrien Rabiot, after one season, is also believed to be packing his bags.
His situation differs as the French midfielder remains under contract, with Milan expecting offers of at least 15 million euros to let him go.
However, rumours suggest he could reunite with Massimiliano Allegri at Napoli.
Then there’s the case of goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The Frenchman recently renewed his contract, believing it would mark a new chapter under Allegri’s leadership.
Allegri, along with sporting director Tare, had been instrumental in convincing him to sign through persistent persuasion.
Now, Maignan is exploring potential moves across Europe.
Leaving, however, will not be easy due to his long-term contract and a lucrative salary of around 5 million euros net per year.
The club is also expected to evaluate offers for players whose sales could generate capital gains, helping to balance the books after two consecutive seasons without Champions League revenue.
Additionally, a number of surplus players will likely be placed on the transfer list.
In short, there is a significant amount of work awaiting Casa Milan, particularly once the new management structure is finalised.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic Opposes Rangnick Appointment, Backs Ramon Planes and Arne Slot with Pimenta’s Support
Despite the overhaul of AC Milan’s management, internal disagreements remain among those still involved.
Reports suggest that Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes he holds the key to reshaping AC Milan according to his vision.
His current plan includes appointing Arne Slot as head coach and Ramon Planes as sporting director.
A key figure in this structure is super-agent Rafaela Pimenta, successor to Mino Raiola, who represented Ibrahimovic for years.
The bond between Pimenta and Ibrahimovic is strong, and she is reportedly the one promoting the path leading to Planes and Slot.
The alternative route involves Ralf Rangnick and Oliver Glasner as technical director and head coach, respectively.
Glasner is expected to meet with Milan officials soon, while Jaissle, another Rangnick protégé, remains tied to Al-Ahli, with compensation demands potentially complicating matters.
AC Ibra
Arne Slot’s stock has risen sharply following his official departure from Liverpool last weekend.
The Dutch manager is ready to embrace a new professional challenge in Italian football.
Ibrahimovic is reportedly determined to move away from Allegri’s tactical approach and bring in a coach with international experience, known for his success in the Eredivisie and Premier League.
Pimenta had already played a key role three years ago when Slot nearly joined Tottenham following Antonio Conte’s departure from Spurs.
However, history took a different turn, leading him to replace Jurgen Klopp and win the league in his first season.
Rangnick, meanwhile, is expected to arrive at AC Milan as a special envoy with wide-ranging authority, bringing in a hand-picked coach like Glasner, whom he worked with during his time at Red Bull.
With the World Cup less than ten days away, Rangnick is set to give a definitive response to the Austrian federation regarding his plans.
The former Manchester United and RB Leipzig coach will meet with federation leaders in the coming days.
He is expected to do so before departing for the United States, but the fact that his focus will initially be on Austria rather than AC Milan might not work in his favour.
Glasner, on the other hand, appears ready to start immediately after winning the Conference League with Crystal Palace.
It’s no coincidence that he has attracted interest from several clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, which has already expressed its willingness to explore the possibility of hiring him.
