Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera has spoken publicly for the first time since conceding the penalty that allowed Paris Saint-Germain to stage a comeback in the Champions League final, which ended in heartbreak for the Gunners. The young Spaniard expressed his disappointment but affirmed that the difficult experience would help him grow stronger.

Mosquera reflects on turning point in the final

Mosquera faced a tough ending to Arsenal’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. The defender found himself at the centre of a crucial incident involving Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The PSG winger managed to get past Mosquera inside the box, prompting the Arsenal player to attempt a recovery tackle. However, his challenge brought down the Georgian forward, resulting in a penalty.

Ousmane Dembele successfully converted the spot-kick, cancelling out Kai Havertz’s early opener. The match remained locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout. Arsenal eventually fell 4-3, with Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes unable to find the net from the spot.

Defender determined to bounce back stronger

Following the defeat, Mosquera shared his thoughts in a heartfelt Instagram post. He wrote: “Wow… How quickly life can change in just a few moments. When everything seems to be going perfectly, just as you’ve dreamed of since childhood, suddenly, in an instant, one action changes everything.

“I’ve dreamt of moments like this all my life, but it didn’t unfold the way I hoped. That’s when God reminds me that faith isn’t about the result, but about continuing to trust even after a setback. Though this defeat hurts deeply, it will ultimately make me stronger.

“Still, my first season at this club has been unforgettable. Champions of England! Seeing so many people happy yesterday was incredible. Enjoy this beautiful moment — you’ve earned it. I’m confident there are many more great memories ahead for this club, as we continue to grow together.

“I’m proud of every one of us. It’s a blessing to be part of this team and such a massive club. THANK YOU! THIS IS ARSENAL!”

Teammates and Keown rally behind the young defender

Support soon poured in from the Arsenal squad. Gabriel commented, “Go for it, brother! Let’s go together,” while Mikel Merino echoed, “We’re together, brother. You’re the best.”

Kepa Arrizabalaga, former Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Piero Hincapie also offered messages of encouragement and solidarity on social media.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown also backed Mosquera, praising his performance despite the penalty incident. Speaking on TNT Sport, Keown said: “I have to talk about Mosquera — he played really well. His only mistake was conceding the penalty. Kvaratskhelia is one of the best players in the world. Mosquera is a central defender who was asked to play at full-back — that’s not an easy task.”

Mosquera determined to learn from the experience

Describing the setback as something that “will make him stronger,” Mosquera remains focused on building from his promising debut season in north London as he continues to develop and cement his place in Arsenal’s future plans.
