Qeshm Island: Amidst the increasing tension in the Gulf region, loud explosions were heard at many places in Kuwait early Wednesday. After this, the Kuwaiti army confirmed that the country’s air defense systems are working actively to stop hostile missiles and drone attacks. It is believed that Iran has taken revenge for the American strike. Earlier, America had attacked Qeshm Island of Iran.

The Kuwait Army’s General Staff said in its initial statement that air defense systems “are currently facing hostile missile and drone attacks.” The army clarified that the sounds of explosions heard by civilians were actually the result of interception operations being carried out by air defense systems.

What appeal did Kuwait make to the people?

As the situation developed further, the army issued a second public warning message. In this, citizens and residents were asked not to go near any kind of debris, metal pieces or unknown objects and not to touch them. Officials warned that the remains of intercepted aerial targets could pose a serious threat to public safety.

In its statement, the Army said, “The General Staff of the Army urges everyone to cooperate and follow the guidelines issued, so that the safety and security of all can be ensured.”

Attack on Iran’s Qeshm Island?

Before this development, on June 2, America had taken a military action on Iran’s Qeshm Island. According to the US military, the attack was targeted at an Iranian military ground control station that was being used to conduct and control drone operations.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed that US forces earlier intercepted several Iranian drones and ballistic missiles, which were fired in different directions in the Middle East region.

According to CENTCOM, US forces first shot down three “one-way attack drones” that were sent towards civilian ships passing through regional sea lanes. After this, the US Army attacked the drone control facility located on Qeshm Island in self-defense.

Why is Qeshm Island very important strategically?

Qeshm Island is of utmost strategic importance for Iran. This island is located at the entry gate of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supply passes. For this reason it is considered very important from the point of view of regional security and global energy supply.

This island is not only an important economic center but also a major part of Iran’s military strategy. Western military analysts often describe Qeshm as an “unsinkable aircraft carrier”. Spread over an area of about 1,445 square kilometers, this island, due to its huge size and mountainous topography, is considered important in monitoring the narrow sea routes of the Persian Gulf.

Are underground anti-ship missiles deployed?

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has deployed heavy forces on this island. A complex network of underground tunnels, bunkers and missile silos has been built here. Advanced anti-ship missiles are said to be deployed in these underground structures. They are also seen as operational targets for combat drones and fast attack boats, which can be used against enemy warships.

The ongoing military activities in the Gulf region and incidents of interception of missiles and drones by Kuwait have raised new concerns about regional security. At the same time, there is a possibility of further increase in tension in the Middle East after the American attack on Iran’s strategically important Qeshm Island.
