Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has revealed the key reason he feels deeply thankful to Michael Carrick for his recent career turnaround.

After struggling to find a place in the squad under Ruben Amorim and slipping down the pecking order, Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford looked uncertain during the 2025/26 season. The young midfielder had even asked to go out on loan towards the end of last summer’s transfer window, but the club denied his request. Although he was expected to leave in January for more game time, Amorim’s departure and Carrick’s subsequent appointment as manager completely changed his prospects.

Under Carrick, Mainoo quickly transformed from a fringe player into one of Manchester United’s most vital figures. Out of the 17 matches Carrick managed, the academy graduate from Carrington missed just one, highlighting his growing importance in the squad.

His resurgence coincided with United’s strong finish to the season, which ensured the club’s return to the UEFA Champions League after a two-year gap. Mainoo’s impressive performances caught the eye of England boss Thomas Tuchel, leading to his inclusion in the national squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Mainoo credited Carrick for playing a major role in his comeback and his selection for England. He said, “We were all very happy with it, of course. We supported the manager from the beginning.”

He continued, “There were so many great performances under him, and I really like how he coaches and manages me within the team. I think everyone in the squad would agree with that. So when he officially got the job, we were all delighted.”

When asked whether Carrick deserved credit for his World Cup call-up, Mainoo replied, “Definitely, and I told him that I was really grateful. If he hadn’t given me the chance to play, I wouldn’t be here today. I’ll always be thankful to him for that.”

This World Cup marks Mainoo’s debut on football’s grandest stage. The 21-year-old previously featured prominently for England at the European Championship, starting in the final against Spain, though the team fell short. Now, he hopes to once again play a significant role for his country.
