Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has approved the nomination of BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay as Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), while legislators Manoj Kumar Shokeen and Ajay Kumar Mahawar, along with Delhi Cantonment Board representative Rajesh Kumar Goel, have been nominated as members of the Board.
The appointments are aimed at strengthening the functioning of the Delhi Jal Board, the agency responsible for water supply and sewage management across the national capital. The nominations come as Delhi continues to face recurring challenges to water distribution, supply management, leakages, and growing demand during the summer months.
Satish Upadhyay, the MLA from Malviya Nagar and a former president of the Delhi BJP, will take over as Vice-Chairman of the Board. The position had remained vacant for several months following the formation of the BJP-led government in Delhi earlier this year. Upadhyay has previously served as Vice-Chairman of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and is considered one of the senior leaders in the Delhi unit of the party.
Alongside Upadhyay, Nangloi Jat MLA Manoj Kumar Shokeen and Ghonda MLA Ajay Kumar Mahawar have been nominated as members of the Delhi Jal Board. Rajesh Kumar Goel has been inducted as the representative from the Delhi Cantonment Board, expanding the Board’s representation in matters to water management and civic coordination.
The Delhi Jal Board plays a critical role in ensuring drinking water supply to millions of residents and managing the capital’s wastewater infrastructure. The Board has been at the centre of several policy discussions in recent years over issues ranging from water shortages and pipeline losses to sewage treatment and Yamuna river cleaning projects.
According to official communications, the nominations have been made under the provisions of the Delhi Water Board Act, 1998. The move is expected to facilitate quicker decision-making and strengthen oversight of ongoing projects to water security and urban infrastructure.
The appointments come at a time when the Delhi government is focusing on summer water management, augmentation of supply networks, and improvements in civic services. Officials believe the newly constituted leadership team will help enhance coordination between policymakers and implementing agencies responsible for water- services in the national capital.
With the new appointments now in place, attention is expected to shift toward addressing Delhi’s long-standing water infrastructure challenges and ensuring reliable supply for residents across the city.
