The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday announced a new set of appointments for key positions in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, signaling a fresh organizational arrangement within the House following recent political developments in the state.

In an official announcement, the party named veteran legislator Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. The appointment places the senior TMC leader at the forefront of the party’s legislative strategy and parliamentary interventions inside the House.

The party also appointed Ashima Patra and Nayana Bandopadhyay as Deputy Leaders of Opposition. Both leaders are expected to assist in coordinating legislative activities, floor management and party responses during Assembly proceedings.

Meanwhile, senior TMC leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim has been appointed as the Chief Whip of the party in the Assembly. The Chief Whip plays a crucial role in ensuring party discipline, coordinating attendance during important debates and votes, and communicating legislative strategy to party lawmakers.

The appointments come at a significant political moment in West Bengal, where the Assembly recently witnessed a major expansion of the Council of Ministers. The latest organizational changes are being viewed as part of the party’s efforts to strengthen coordination between its government and legislative wings.

Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay is among the most experienced leaders in Bengal politics and has held several important ministerial responsibilities over the years. His appointment is expected to bring considerable legislative experience to the party’s Assembly operations.

Firhad Hakim, one of the most prominent faces of the TMC leadership, has remained a key figure in state politics and urban governance. As Chief Whip, he will be responsible for maintaining cohesion among legislators and ensuring smooth execution of the party’s parliamentary agenda.

Political observers note that the selection of Ashima Patra and Nayana Bandopadhyay as Deputy Leaders of Opposition also reflects the party’s effort to provide greater representation to women leaders in legislative affairs.

The announcement comes as political parties in the state prepare for an active Assembly session marked by debates on governance, development policies and state-centre relations. The newly appointed leadership team is expected to play a critical role in shaping the party’s responses to opposition criticism and legislative challenges.

While the appointments primarily concern the functioning of the Assembly, they are also likely to be closely watched for their broader political significance ahead of future electoral contests in the state.

Party leaders said the new structure has been designed to ensure efficient floor coordination and stronger legislative engagement. With senior leaders occupying key positions, the TMC is expected to sharpen its strategy inside the Assembly and strengthen communication between lawmakers and the party leadership.

The appointments take immediate effect and will guide the party’s legislative functioning during the ongoing Assembly term.
