Lamine Yamal will sport the No.19 jersey at his maiden World Cup after Spain confirmed their official squad numbers for the tournament. The announcement has stirred discussion among fans, especially after midfielder Gavi was given the iconic No.9 shirt, while Dani Olmo will wear the prestigious No.10.

Spain have finalised their squad numbers ahead of the World Cup, with Yamal retaining the No.19 he wears for Barcelona. The young prodigy will continue with the same number as he prepares for his first appearance on football’s biggest stage, with La Roja aiming for their second world title.

The most talked-about decision has been assigning the No.9 jersey to Gavi. Traditionally reserved for strikers, this number has previously been worn by Spain legends like Fernando Torres and Alvaro Morata. The unusual choice of giving it to a midfielder has quickly become a topic of debate among supporters.

Meanwhile, Dani Olmo will take on the No.10 shirt, Nico Williams will wear No.17, and Mikel Oyarzabal will don No.21. In goal, David Raya will wear No.1, while Unai Simon takes No.23 as his squad number.

Fans have been vocal about Spain’s unconventional numbering decisions. Many supporters questioned the decision to award Gavi the No.9 shirt, arguing that a forward should traditionally hold that number rather than a midfielder.

Some also highlighted that several key players in Spain’s setup have been assigned higher numbers instead of the more traditional 1–11 range, which has added to the conversation around the team’s selection approach.

The announcement comes as optimism builds within the Spanish camp before the World Cup. Head coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed faith in his players but cautioned against overconfidence.

“We must remain grounded, even if people call us favourites,” De la Fuente told reporters. “I don’t deny that we are among the favourites, but so are England and France. We all share the same ambition.”

Spain continue their preparations with friendly fixtures against Iraq and Peru before turning their focus to the World Cup group stage. De la Fuente’s side is drawn in Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. While the jersey number debate continues, the spotlight will soon shift to performances on the pitch as Spain look to prove their credentials as one of the tournament’s top contenders.
