Geneva. The United Nations has warned that a new and dangerous phase of ‘El Nino’ may begin in the next few weeks, which may further increase the temperature of the Earth which is suffering from climate change. In this warning issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it has been said that El Nino is expected to become stronger in the remaining months of the year 2026, due to which severe and extreme weather may be seen in many parts of the world.
Threat of powerful Super El Nino
Estimates from weather agencies of many countries suggest that this could be the strongest El Nino ever, which experts are also calling ‘Super El Nino’. Predicting the exact timing and impact of El Niño has always been challenging, so scientists are constantly monitoring the central Pacific Ocean to understand its signals.
While in the month of December the water in this region was cooler than average and there was no sign of El Nino, by March the situation completely changed. The waters of the central Pacific Ocean began to warm and very warm waters were observed off the coast of South America. By April the threat of El Nino became clear, as temperatures in the main monitoring area were rising rapidly.
How is El Nino formed?
Actually, El Nino is formed when due to change in wind direction, warm water spreads into the tropical Pacific Ocean. Meteorologists are confident that a major weather event is coming, which may create a new record so far. If the temperature in this area of the Pacific Ocean rises by more than two degrees Celsius above normal for a long period of time, it is called ‘Super El Nino’.
Only a few such cases have occurred since 1950, but this time’s forecasts suggest that this new El Nino could break all previous records. According to satellite and oceanographic instruments, a huge wave of warm water hundreds of meters below the ocean surface is moving east. This warming within the ocean often leads to warming of surface waters, which in turn warms the air above and worsens weather around the world.
El Nino will add fuel to the already hot earth’s fire
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also warned that El Nino conditions will add fuel to the fire of an already warming world and its effects will be very devastating. Although no two El Niños are alike and different countries are affected at different times, the general effects of a strong El Niño are quite dangerous. This causes the weather to become extremely hot and dry in parts of South America, South-East Asia and Australia, increasing the risk of drought and forest fires.
alarm bell for india
It could also weaken the Indian monsoon and lead to drought in parts of Africa, while heavy rains in areas like South America could lead to increased flood risk. History is witness to the fact that El Nino causes massive crop damage, making food items expensive across the world and causing huge losses to the economy. Usually, in an El Nino year, the world’s temperature increases by about 0.2 degrees Celsius. Looking at this situation, climate scientists believe that the year 2027 is likely to be the hottest year ever.
