Islamabad. Amidst the growing energy crisis and efforts to control electricity consumption, the Government of Pakistan has issued strict instructions regarding the operating timings of markets and business establishments in the capital Islamabad. Under the new order, it has been made mandatory to close all markets, shops and shopping malls by 8 pm from Monday.
According to the notification issued by the district administration, this rule will remain in effect throughout the week and action has been warned against the violators. The administration says its aim is to reduce electricity consumption and control the increasing pressure on energy resources.
However, some essential services have been exempted from this order. These include pharmacies, hospitals, emergency medical services, petrol pumps, dairy outlets, sports facilities, call centres, data centers and IT companies serving international customers.

Traders expressed displeasure
There is resentment among business organizations regarding this decision of the government. Traders say that many markets in Pakistan open late afternoon and continue till late night. In such a situation, premature closure of shops can affect small traders and local businesses.
The government gave the reason
The government argues that electricity consumption is higher and more expensive at night. In such a situation, doing more business activities during the day will save energy and reduce the pressure on the electricity system. The administration has also appealed for cooperation from business organizations.
In recent months, Pakistan has taken several steps regarding energy management amid regional tensions and fluctuating fuel prices. Now it has to be seen how much impact this decision has on the markets and the daily routine of common people.
