BINJAI - Support for Argentina to claim the 2026 FIFA World Cup title continues to grow among football fans across Indonesia.

With a highly skilled squad and as the reigning champions, Argentina are widely expected to defend their crown in this edition of the tournament.

This sentiment was expressed by the well-known lawyer and legal practitioner from Binjai, Ferdinand Sembiring.

"I’ve always supported Argentina. My favourite Argentine player used to be Juan Roman Riquelme," said Ferdinand during an interview with journalists on Tuesday (June 2, 2026).

Ferdinand went on to describe Riquelme as a player known for his elegant style, precise passing, vision, creativity, free-kick technique, and exceptional ball control.

Riquelme is widely regarded as one of the greatest playmakers in football history.

"In my opinion, Riquelme had no equal in his era for Argentina. But now, it’s the time of Lionel Messi," Ferdinand added.

However, Ferdinand noted that Argentina still lacks depth in the goalkeeper position. Despite the presence of Emiliano Martinez, the Aston Villa shot-stopper, he believes the team only recently found stability in that area.

"I think only recently Argentina has had a truly great goalkeeper. Martinez’s reflexes are outstanding, as we saw during the 2022 World Cup," Ferdinand explained.

Even so, Ferdinand remains confident that Argentina will emerge as the champions of the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to kick off soon.

This edition, taking place in the summer, will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The opening match is scheduled for June 11, with the final to be held on July 19, 2026.

This tournament marks the largest in World Cup history, being the first to be played in three countries and featuring 48 teams—an expansion from the previous 32-team format.
