Timothy Fosu-Mensah, a product of Manchester United’s Carrington academy, has opened up about his admiration for the team’s captain, Bruno Fernandes.
The Dutch defender began his youth career at Ajax before moving to Manchester United in 2014. He made his senior debut for the club in 2016 under then-manager Louis van Gaal and went on to feature in 30 matches for the Red Devils.
During his time at Old Trafford, Fosu-Mensah also had loan spells at Crystal Palace and Fulham before departing the club in 2020. He then joined Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, where injuries unfortunately limited him to just 30 appearances across four seasons.
Now a free agent, the Netherlands international recently spoke to Sky Sports, where he shared his perspective on Bruno Fernandes’ impact at Manchester United.
Speaking about the Portuguese midfielder, Fosu-Mensah remarked that many people still fail to fully understand how exceptional Fernandes is. He said, “I would say maybe Bruno Fernandes is in a similar situation as Paul (Pogba) because he’s still playing, and people don’t really see what he’s doing for the club right now, but later they’ll realise how incredible his contribution was.”
Expanding on Fernandes’ influence, he added, “He doesn’t fear anything. I remember one match — I think it was away against Everton — Luke (Shaw) and I were on the bench, and Luke said, ‘Bruno, it’s not normal!’ I agreed because ever since he arrived, the standards have been so high and they’ve stayed that way.”
Fosu-Mensah’s comments come after a remarkable season for Fernandes. The Manchester United captain broke the Premier League record for most assists in a single season with 21 and also scored nine goals, capping off an outstanding campaign.
With the domestic season concluded, Fernandes will now turn his attention to leading Portugal in pursuit of their first-ever World Cup title next month.
