Real Madrid forward Rodrygo recently shared an emotional experience with his fans after receiving a heartfelt gift from his long-time hero, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Brazilian attacker, who is currently recovering from a serious knee injury, was touched by a message of encouragement sent personally by the Portuguese legend to the Santiago Bernabeu star.
A touching gesture during his recovery
Rodrygo has always been open about his admiration for Ronaldo, frequently imitating the iconic "Siu" celebration and naming the Al-Nassr captain as his biggest inspiration in the sport. In the middle of a demanding rehabilitation period, the 23-year-old was deeply moved by a thoughtful act from the man he considers the greatest footballer of all time.
The Real Madrid striker took to his official X account to reveal a signed Al-Nassr jersey that had been sent to him directly by Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar added a personal message on the shirt that read, “To Rodrygo, a hug.” Overwhelmed by the gesture, Rodrygo captioned his post with, “Thank you, Idol! Cristiano.”
Heartbreak over missing the 2026 World Cup
The supportive message arrived at a particularly challenging moment in Rodrygo’s career. In early March, the Merengues forward suffered a severe blow when he was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and outer meniscus in his right knee following a La Liga fixture against Getafe. The injury comes with a recovery timeline of 10 to 12 months, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
The setback also affects Brazil’s international ambitions, as Rodrygo has been officially sidelined for the 2026 World Cup. The Selecao will now have to navigate the tournament in North America without one of their most creative attacking options. Ronaldo’s encouraging gesture was meant to lift the spirits of a young player facing a long road back to full fitness.
Rodrygo’s regret of missing Ronaldo at Real Madrid
When Cristiano Ronaldo departed the Bernabeu to join Italian giants Juventus, Rodrygo was finalising his own transfer to Spain. However, due to age restrictions, he had to wait a year until turning 18 before the move could officially be completed. By the time he finally arrived in Madrid, the Portuguese icon had already left the club.
This has remained a lingering regret for the Brazilian forward, who revealed during an interview on the Brazilian YouTube channel Lives do Jon: “I wanted to play with Cristiano Ronaldo, but it didn’t happen. It’s unfortunate because he’s my role model. I’ve always admired him.”
Ronaldo gears up for a record sixth World Cup
While Rodrygo continues his recovery, 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo remains relentless as he prepares for what could be his sixth World Cup campaign. The former Real Madrid superstar is on the verge of making history by becoming one of the first three players ever to feature in six editions of the global tournament, joining Lionel Messi and Guillermo Ochoa in that elite group.
Portugal have been placed in Group K, where they will begin their campaign against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 17. Ronaldo and his teammates will then take on Uzbekistan on June 23, followed by a final group-stage clash against Colombia on June 27.
