New Delhi: The title match of IPL 2026 is not just a clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans but it is also a big test of the future and credibility of two different captains of Indian cricket.
The biggest turning point of career
This great match to be held today at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is a golden opportunity for Gujarat Titans captain Shubhman Gill to prove his captaincy. Whereas RCB’s calm strategist Rajat Patidar has a historic opportunity to immortalize his name in the pages of history. For both the players, this match can prove to be the biggest turning point of their career.
The biggest ‘test’ of captaincy for Shubman Gill
The journey of captaincy at the international level has been full of ups and downs for Shubman Gill, who took charge of the Indian ODI and Test team after Rohit Sharma. Under his captaincy, India played a historic 2-2 Test series draw in England. But the series had to be lost 0-2 against South Africa at home. He also had to lose the vice-captaincy in the T20 format and was dropped from the team just before the T20 World Cup 2026. In such a situation, today’s final can become a ‘crowning moment’ for Gill.
The ‘Prince’ of runs searches for his first trophy
Gill, who took Gujarat to the final for the first time under his captaincy after the departure of Hardik Pandya, has continuously done wonders with the bat. Gill has scored 1798 runs in IPL since 2024 and he is behind only Virat Kohli (1998 runs) and Sai Sudarshan (1996 runs) in this list. Despite being an excellent batsman, Gill is still searching for his first major trophy as captain and a memorable achievement which he can get today.
Opportunity to compete with these players
On the other hand, RCB captain Rajat Patidar is creating his own legacy by staying away from the glare of the media. Patidar played a stormy innings of 93 runs in just 33 balls against Gujarat in Qualifier-1, taking RCB to a huge score of 254/5.
What will happen if RCB becomes champion?
If Patidar makes his team champion today, then RCB will become the third team in the league to win the second consecutive IPL title. Before this, only MS Dhoni (CSK, 2010-11) and Rohit Sharma (MI, 2019-20) have been able to defend the title twice consecutively. This silent leadership of Patidar will present the toughest challenge to Gill’s big claims today.
