The Colombia national football team secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Costa Rica in a warm-up match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Led by Luis Díaz, Colombia dominated Costa Rica, while Canada had to work hard to overcome Fabio Cannavaro’s Uzbekistan in another World Cup 2026 preparation match.
The friendly fixtures took place on Tuesday morning (2 June 2026, WIB), featuring three of the teams set to compete in the upcoming World Cup.
Colombia faced Costa Rica, while Canada squared off against debutants Uzbekistan.
The first match, between Colombia and Costa Rica, was held at Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín.
On paper and in terms of squad quality, La Tricolor were clearly superior to their visitors.
That advantage quickly showed, as Colombia scored twice within the first half-hour of play.
Davinson Sánchez opened the scoring in the 17th minute after receiving an assist from Luis Díaz.
Just six minutes later, Díaz himself found the back of the net to double Colombia’s lead to 2-0.
The Bayern Munich winger also wore the captain’s armband for this match.
Costa Rica managed to pull one back through Andrey Soto in the 33rd minute, reducing the deficit to 1-2.
Colombia went into halftime leading 2-1.
In the second half, head coach Néstor Lorenzo made four substitutions, including introducing veteran midfielder James Rodríguez.
Interestingly, the captain’s armband was immediately passed from Díaz to Rodríguez as he entered the pitch.
The former Real Madrid playmaker showed that he still possesses his trademark creativity by providing an assist for Luis Suárez’s goal in the 81st minute.
With that, Colombia sealed an emphatic 3-1 win over Fernando Batista’s Costa Rica side.
In the other match at Commonwealth Stadium, Canada found themselves struggling against Uzbekistan in the first half.
The 2026 World Cup co-hosts were frustrated by Fabio Cannavaro’s disciplined setup before the break.
Despite their dominance in possession, Jonathan David and his teammates managed to register only one shot in the first half.
Uzbekistan employed a three-man defensive line, anchored by Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
Khusanov delivered a strong performance, recording six interceptions and six clearances throughout the match.
However, Uzbekistan eventually succumbed to the hosts, losing 0-2.
Jonathan Osorio broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, before Jayden Nelson secured the win with a late goal in stoppage time (90+1’).
Canada thus claimed a 2-0 victory over the Central Asian representatives as their World Cup preparations continued.
