Rodri will decide his future after the 2026 World Cup amid growing rumours of Real Madrid's interest in the Spanish midfielder.
Spain international Rodrigo Hernandez Cascante, better known as Rodri, has reportedly been on Real Madrid’s radar since the summer of 2025.
Rodri has become one of the main targets for Los Blancos as they search for a central midfielder capable of dictating the tempo of play.
Following the retirement of Toni Kroos and the departure of Luka Modric, the Spanish capital club has been lacking a midfielder with the same ability to control the game.
Although Real Madrid still have Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Federico Valverde, all three possess different characteristics from Kroos and Modric, who were instrumental in the club’s decade-long success.
As a result, Los Merengues have turned their attention to Rodri, who may leave Manchester City with only one year remaining on his current contract.
Amid Real Madrid’s growing interest, the 29-year-old has yet to sign the new deal offered by The Citizens.
This situation has further fuelled speculation that the former Atletico Madrid player could be heading to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite the intensifying rumours, Rodri has remained calm and unbothered about his future.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner stated that he does not want to rush his decision and intends to focus entirely on the 2026 World Cup.
Regarding Madrid’s reported interest, the Atletico Madrid academy graduate clarified that it is merely speculation.
He believes such rumours are natural, considering he is approaching the end of his contract with Manchester City.
“With the World Cup ahead, my responsibility is to stay focused,” he told BBC Sport as quoted by BolaSport.com.
“Everything related to my future will have to wait until the World Cup is over.”
“When a player reaches the final stages of his contract, it’s normal for his name to come up in discussions.”
“I’m very calm and fully aware of my situation. I would say that if there wasn’t a World Cup coming, things might be different now,” he concluded.
Although Rodri insists he hasn’t made any decisions about his future yet, he has previously expressed a desire to return to play in Spain someday.
As Madrid’s interest continues to grow, Manchester City are reportedly weighing their options regarding the midfielder’s future.
The first option is to offer him a new contract that would keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 30 June 2029.
If he refuses to sign, The Sky Blues are prepared to take the second option — selling Rodri for an estimated €70 million (approximately ₹1.4 trillion).
This second option would prevent the Manchester-based club from losing Rodri for free when his current deal expires in the summer of 2027.
