A fast-track court in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district has sentenced a 30-year-old woman to life imprisonment for throwing acid on her sleeping husband, an attack that left him permanently blind and severely disfigured.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) Gopal Ji of Chandausi pronounced the sentence on Monday after convicting the accused, Kahkansha, on May 27. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1.75 lakh, taking note of the seriousness and brutality of the offence.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Narendra Kumar Yadav, the incident took place on March 7, 2025, in the Nakhasa police station area of Sambhal district. Investigators alleged that Kahkansha attacked her husband, Muzaffar, while he was asleep at their residence.
The prosecution told the court that the accused allegedly poured acid on her husband with the intention of killing him. When the victim attempted to flee after the initial attack, she allegedly threw acid on him again, causing catastrophic injuries.
The assault left Muzaffar’s face severely disfigured and resulted in the complete loss of vision in both eyes. Medical reports presented during the trial highlighted the permanent and irreversible nature of the injuries suffered by the victim.
According to the prosecution, the couple had been experiencing marital discord for some time. Investigators stated that frequent disputes had taken place between the two and that the accused was reportedly seeking a divorce. During the investigation, allegations also surfaced regarding an extramarital relationship, which police examined as part of the motive behind the attack. The couple has two children.
Following the incident, a case was registered at Nakhasa police station on March 20, 2025, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police conducted an investigation, collected medical evidence and recorded witness statements before filing the chargesheet.
The fast-track court heard the matter over the past several months before delivering its verdict. While convicting the accused, the court observed the grave consequences of the acid attack and the lifelong impact on the victim, who lost his eyesight permanently.
Acid attacks remain among the most serious forms of violent crime due to their devastating physical and psychological consequences. Courts across India have repeatedly emphasized strict punishment in such cases to act as a deterrent and provide justice to victims.
With Monday’s sentencing, the court concluded one of the district’s most high-profile criminal trials of the year. Legal proceedings to compensation and recovery of the imposed fine are expected to follow as per applicable law.
The victim continues to live with permanent injuries resulting from the attack, while the convicted woman will serve a life sentence following the court’s order.
