Chelsea have pulled off one of the standout signings of the Women's Super League by bringing in Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe. The highly versatile left-back joins the West London club as a free agent after her contract with Arsenal expired, making this one of the most notable transfers of the summer window.

A major shift across the London divide

The 30-year-old, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most reliable and dynamic performers, has signed a contract that will keep her at Chelsea until June 2029. The deal also includes an option for an additional year, underlining the club’s intent to keep the Irish international central to their long-term ambitions of adding more trophies to their collection.

McCabe’s move to Kingsmeadow is a clear demonstration of Chelsea’s ambition to stay at the pinnacle of English women’s football. After spending nearly ten years in North London, her decision to cross over to a direct rival injects fresh intrigue into the WSL title race, as the Blues aim to maintain their dominance.

McCabe’s lifelong link to Chelsea

For McCabe, born in Dublin, this transfer carries personal meaning given her family’s long-standing connection with the West London side. Reflecting on the move, she expressed her enthusiasm about this new challenge: “It’s a fresh chapter in my career. I feel this is exactly the right moment for me,” she said to the club’s official media. “I’m really eager to get started and show the Chelsea supporters how ready I am to give my best for the badge.”

She is already anticipating the thrill of stepping out before Chelsea fans at their iconic venues. “I can’t wait to walk out at Stamford Bridge as a home player, to be part of that incredible fan atmosphere, and to compete for trophies on all fronts,” McCabe added. “This club has achieved remarkable success over the years. My goal is to keep that momentum going and contribute to bringing more success to Chelsea.”

The end of a remarkable chapter at Arsenal

McCabe’s transfer brings an end to a distinguished spell at Arsenal, where she made over 300 appearances and netted 36 goals. During her time with the Gunners, she captured a WSL title, the Women’s FA Cup, and, most recently, the Women’s Champions League in 2025. Her outstanding performances also earned her the Arsenal Player of the Season award twice, in 2021 and again in 2023, as voted by the club’s supporters.

Leadership and international legacy

On the international stage, McCabe has been a trailblazer for the Republic of Ireland. Appointed as her nation’s youngest-ever captain at age 21, she has earned 105 caps and scored 34 goals. She famously led Ireland to their first-ever Women’s World Cup in 2023, scoring the team’s inaugural goal of the tournament directly from a corner against Canada. Her phenomenal performances that year also landed her a spot on the Ballon d’Or shortlist, making her the first Irish player to receive a nomination since Roy Keane in 2000.
