The expansionist strategy of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu may face a major setback. There may be rebellion in the same invincible party in BJP which has not witnessed any rebellion since 2014. In fact, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai may soon separate from the party and form his own new party. If this happens, it will be no less than a shock for BJP because in the last 12 years, only leaders of opposition parties have broken away and formed a new party.

K Annamalai is one of the prominent leaders coming from Tamil Nadu. Annamalai said on Monday that he will clarify his position in the next two days, amidst anger with the party and speculations about the possibility of forming a new political organization. Speaking to the media at Chennai airport before leaving for Delhi, Annamalai, when asked about speculations about forming a new political party, said he would respond in two days and clarify his stand.

‘We will sit and talk in two days’

When the media asked the BJP leader about speculations that he was planning to leave the party and was going to meet national president Nitin Naveen in this regard, he said, ‘Please wait. We will sit and talk in two days. Annamalai’s latest statements have led to speculations that BJP’s future in Tamil Nadu may be in trouble.

Annamalai is the leader in Tamil Nadu who, while being the face of BJP in Tamil Nadu, gave a lot of expansion to the party. Besides, he continued to strengthen the organization in the state. But, before the assembly elections, BJP removed him from the post of president. In his place, Nainar Nagendran was made the state president of the party. Since then Annamalai has been away from limelight.

What are Annamalai angry about?

It is believed that Annamalai was angry because the BJP central leadership had not accepted his suggestions before the assembly elections. Apart from this, he had suggested to the party in the assembly elections that the candidates should be announced two years in advance, so that BJP candidates can prepare in advance by going among the people in their areas. The most important thing is that BJP did not even give him the assembly ticket. He is also believed to have disputes with Tamil Nadu BJP leaders on some issues.

Annamalai opposed the central government

K Annamalai has opposed the recent announcement by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to implement the three-language policy for Class IX students from the current academic year and has demanded withdrawal of the notification. These steps clearly reflect his rebellious tone against BJP. His stance gave rise to speculations that Annamalai was opposing the central government as he was preparing to launch his own party.

Have fulfilled many big responsibilities

Annamalai has been a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. He played a key role in including TTV Dhinakaran and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam in the BJP alliance during the 2021 assembly elections. However, he has been away from the limelight after the party high command appointed Nainar Nagendran as BJP state president in place of Annamalai and entered into an electoral pact with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Though BJP members from Coimbatore region had expressed hope of Annamalai contesting the 2026 assembly elections, they later clarified that they have decided to stay away from the electoral fray. A BJP source said that Annamalai is unlikely to leave the party as he may be given a bigger role in the party. But some supporters of Annamalai in Coimbatore have supported her forming a new party to present itself as an alternative to the current ruling Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
