VfL Wolfsburg could face a significant player exodus following their relegation from the Bundesliga, with reports suggesting that young German striker Dzenan Pejcinovic has become a highly sought-after target for several clubs.
As per information from kicker, multiple top international teams are tracking Pejcinovic’s progress, including Portuguese giants Benfica Lisbon. However, it is believed that the 21-year-old Germany Under-21 international is leaning towards staying in the Bundesliga rather than moving abroad.
Clubs such as SC Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen, and Eintracht Frankfurt are said to be keeping a close eye on the striker. Wolfsburg acknowledges that one of their standout young talents has attracted strong interest but insists they would only consider a move if an “exceptional offer” arrives. Reports suggest that any club hoping to secure his services would need to table a bid exceeding €20 million to convince Wolfsburg to part ways with him.
This is not the first time that Pejcinovic has been on the radar of major clubs. Two years ago, Manchester City reportedly pursued him at the urging of Pep Guardiola. At that time, he had scored 31 goals in just 21 matches for Wolfsburg’s U19 team and maintained an identical strike rate for Germany’s youth teams from the U16 to U19 levels, with 38 goals in 38 appearances.
His rapid rise was interrupted by a metatarsal fracture shortly after being promoted to Wolfsburg’s senior squad, which sidelined him for several months. A subsequent loan spell at then-second-division side Fortuna Düsseldorf helped him regain form, though recurring injuries once again hampered his momentum.
Despite Wolfsburg’s struggles this season, Pejcinovic has been one of their few bright spots and arguably their biggest success story during the relegation campaign.
After recovering from his metatarsal injury, he made an immediate impact by scoring the equaliser against Ulm in his comeback game. However, his progress was disrupted again when he suffered a meniscus tear while representing Germany’s U20 team, which ruled him out for over a month. On returning to action, he initially impressed as a substitute before forming a productive partnership with Dawid Kownacki, scoring four goals in 17 appearances. Unfortunately, another metatarsal fracture kept him out for the final eight matches of Düsseldorf’s promotion race.
Back at Wolfsburg, Pejcinovic finally enjoyed an injury-free season and established himself as a reliable performer in his debut full Bundesliga campaign. Although he didn’t score until the final match before the winter break, he soon found his rhythm—netting a hat-trick against SC Freiburg, and adding further goals against FC Bayern Munich and St. Pauli. He also made the step up to Germany’s U21 side, marking his debut in September with a goal and starting six of seven European Championship qualifiers, though he currently remains behind Nicolo Tresoldi in coach Antonio Di Salvo’s selection hierarchy.
Pejcinovic concluded the season with a total of 12 goals across 34 competitive matches, including the opening goal in the second leg of the relegation play-off against SC Paderborn. However, Wolfsburg’s hopes were dashed after Joakim Maehle received an early red card, a setback that ultimately contributed to their relegation.
