After years of anticipation, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally approaching. The finest footballers on the planet are heading to the United States, Mexico, and Canada, all dreaming of lifting the most coveted trophy in world football when the action begins on June 11.
While collective glory will define success for most teams, individual honours will also be up for grabs — none more prestigious than the Golden Boot, awarded to the tournament’s top goal-scorer.
Some of football’s greatest icons have previously claimed this honour, including Eusebio, Gerd Muller, Mario Kempes, Paolo Rossi, Gary Lineker, and Ronaldo Nazario. In recent times, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane have lifted the award, and both are in the running to become the first player ever to win the Golden Boot more than once at this summer’s competition.
With an abundance of attacking talent on display, many top forwards will be eager to etch their names into the history books. Let’s take a look at the leading contenders for the 2026 Golden Boot:
10. Folarin Balogun (United States)
Although the chances of an American Golden Boot winner might appear slim, Folarin Balogun gives the co-hosts genuine hope. The 24-year-old has been one of the most in-form strikers in world football, scoring 19 goals for Monaco last season — 12 of which came after the turn of the year.
With Mauricio Pochettino’s side benefiting from home support, the U.S. will be confident of making the knockout rounds, possibly even topping Group D, where they face Paraguay, Turkiye, and Australia.
Balogun has also impressed at international level since switching allegiance from England. Heading into the tournament, he has nine goals and four assists in 26 appearances, and will look to add to that tally this summer.
9. Luis Diaz (Colombia)
Luis Diaz arrives at the World Cup after a stellar debut season in Germany following his move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich, where he netted 26 goals as part of one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking trios.
Firmly Colombia’s main man, Diaz showcased his quality in qualifying — notably scoring twice against Brazil to secure Colombia’s first-ever victory over the Selecao, just days after his father’s release from a horrifying kidnapping ordeal.
He followed that up with a stunning strike against world champions Argentina, proving his ability to shine on big occasions. Colombia’s opening match against World Cup newcomers Uzbekistan could provide the perfect platform for Diaz to make an early statement.
8. Vinicius Jr (Brazil)
Vinicius Jr has reunited with his former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, now at the helm of Brazil, and the veteran manager will hope to finally unlock the forward’s full potential in the national side.
Vinicius’s international goal tally remains modest — his recent strike against Panama was just his ninth in 48 appearances — but after rediscovering his scoring touch for Madrid, he certainly possesses the quality and experience to dazzle on the world stage.
Brazil’s group also looks favourable for goals. With Haiti returning to the World Cup after 52 years, alongside Scotland and Morocco, Ancelotti’s men will fancy their chances of making a strong start in pursuit of a sixth title.
7. Julian Alvarez (Argentina)
With Lionel Messi still the centrepiece of Argentina’s attack, only one of Julian Alvarez or Lautaro Martinez usually starts. Despite Lautaro topping the scoring charts at Copa America 2024, Alvarez’s work rate and versatility might give him the edge in Lionel Scaloni’s line-up.
Although Alvarez endured a challenging season at Atletico Madrid — scoring just twice in La Liga since October — his talent is unquestionable. The World Cup offers him the perfect opportunity to rediscover form and shine for his country.
Having scored four goals in seven appearances at the 2022 World Cup, only behind Messi and Mbappe, Alvarez has already proven himself on the grandest stage and could be even more dangerous this time around.
6. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
Even at 41, Cristiano Ronaldo remains a lethal presence for Portugal. His five goals in five qualifiers helped his country secure a World Cup berth, despite missing the final match due to suspension.
Now cleared to play after FIFA reduced his ban for an elbowing incident against Ireland’s Dara O’Shea, Ronaldo is set to lead Portugal’s attack in a group with Colombia, DR Congo, and debutants Uzbekistan.
Ronaldo will benefit from an immensely talented supporting cast that includes Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto, Francisco Conceicao, Bernardo Silva, and fellow Al-Nassr star Joao Felix — all capable of creating scoring chances aplenty.
5. Lionel Messi (Argentina)
After leading Argentina to the 2022 title, Lionel Messi will aim to defend the World Cup crown — and perhaps complete his personal trophy collection by claiming the Golden Boot for the first time.
Set to turn 39 during the tournament, this will almost certainly be Messi’s final World Cup. Yet, age hasn’t slowed him down — he won the MLS Golden Boot last season with 35 goals and topped CONMEBOL qualifying with eight. Even in the twilight of his career, Messi remains a strong contender.
4. Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)
While not the most obvious pick, Mikel Oyarzabal’s prolific recent form makes him a serious Golden Boot threat. The Real Sociedad forward scored the decisive goal in the Euro 2024 final and has 11 goals in his last 11 matches for Spain, including six in six during qualifying.
Oyarzabal also enjoyed his best-ever La Liga season with 15 goals, underlining his confidence ahead of the World Cup. With Spain among the favourites, a deep run could boost his chances, especially as he takes penalties. Injuries to other key attackers like Lamine Yamal further cement Oyarzabal’s role as Spain’s main attacking weapon.
3. Erling Haaland (Norway)
Erling Haaland fired Norway to their first World Cup since 1998 by netting 16 goals in just eight qualifiers — double the next highest scorer in Europe. The Manchester City striker will now finally make his debut at a major international tournament.
Supported by talents like Martin Odegaard, Oscar Bobb, and Antonio Nusa, Norway could surprise a few. Their perfect qualifying record suggests they’re dark horses in this competition.
However, tough group fixtures against France and Senegal will test them early, meaning Haaland will need to start strong when Norway face Iraq in their opener.
2. Kylian Mbappe (France)
Kylian Mbappe claimed the 2022 Golden Boot with eight goals in seven outings, and the Real Madrid superstar is among the favourites again. He reminded everyone of his brilliance with a sensational goal against Brazil in March’s friendly.
With creative support from Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, Rayan Cherki, and Desire Doue, Mbappe will have no shortage of service. After another prolific season — 42 goals in 44 games — he looks poised for another explosive World Cup campaign.
1. Harry Kane (England)
Harry Kane, already a World Cup Golden Boot winner from 2018, will aim to add another to his collection this summer. The England captain scored eight goals in qualifying and is firmly established as the nation’s all-time top scorer.
The 32-year-old enters the tournament in scintillating form, having netted an astonishing 61 goals during Bayern Munich’s double-winning season. His back-to-back hat-tricks to close the campaign underline his sharpness.
Kane will spearhead England’s bid to improve upon their 2022 quarter-final finish. With group-stage opponents Croatia, Ghana, and Panama — the latter of whom he scored a hat-trick against in 2018 — he’ll be confident of getting off the mark early.
