Manchester United are preparing a move for Benfica’s €45 million-rated midfielder as part of their upcoming summer squad overhaul.

Reports suggest that the Red Devils have opened discussions with Benfica to sign emerging midfield talent Richard Rios, who is seen as a key component in the club’s plan to strengthen their central midfield this summer.

Currently placed third in the Premier League under Michael Carrick’s management, United have enjoyed a strong start to his reign — matching the best-ever record for a Premier League manager or head coach after nine matches.

However, with two defeats and one draw in their last five league games, the team’s form has started to dip. The potential departure of a rejuvenated Casemiro during the summer could further complicate matters.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Manchester United have already reached out to Benfica regarding the possible transfer of Colombian midfielder Richard Rios.

Rios, whose development was highlighted in FourFourTwo’s two-minute scouting report, is regarded as one of Europe’s most complete midfielders in the making — a Champions League-calibre player who appears ready to adapt to Premier League football.

Benfica are believed to be open to parting ways with the player for around €45 million, even though the valuation varies among clubs currently vying for his signature.

United are not alone in their pursuit of the talented 25-year-old, as Premier League rivals Fulham have also expressed interest in securing his services.

Elsewhere, Serie A side Napoli are reportedly monitoring Rios as well, considering a potential bid to bring the midfielder to Italy next season.

According to sources, Benfica’s valuation of Rios stands between €30 million and €45 million, though his performances at the upcoming World Cup 2026 could significantly influence his market value.

While it remains uncertain whether signing Rios is a top priority for Manchester United, club scouts have attended several of his matches in recent months. Their positive feedback is said to have played a crucial role in prompting the club’s approach to Benfica.

Michael Carrick’s team have been linked with numerous players ahead of the summer transfer window, though many of these pursuits have either cooled or been matched by rival Premier League sides.

It is understood that United are targeting one marquee midfield acquisition — possibly Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson — alongside another addition aimed at bolstering squad depth.

Manchester United will return to Premier League action next Monday, hosting eighth-placed Brentford at Old Trafford.
