Premier League legend James Milner retires from football at 40

James Milner, the Premier League’s all-time record appearance holder, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.

The experienced midfielder, known for his versatility and professionalism, began his football journey at the Leeds United academy. Over the years, he built an illustrious career featuring for several top English clubs, including Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and most recently, Brighton & Hove Albion.

Throughout his storied career, Milner captured three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two League Cups, and the UEFA Champions League — a trophy cabinet that reflects his consistency and contribution across two decades of top-flight football.

On the international front, Milner remains England’s record holder for Under-21 appearances with 46 caps. He later represented the senior national team 61 times, earning recognition for his relentless work ethic and leadership both on and off the pitch.

In a heartfelt statement shared on his social media, Milner expressed his gratitude as he brought the curtain down on a 24-season-long Premier League career. “After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey, Milner extended his thanks to the fans and everyone who supported him: “To the fans, thank you. To those who supported me every step of the way, your encouragement meant more than you’ll ever know. And to those who gave me grief along the way, thank you too — you all played your part in making the journey memorable and helping shape me as a player and person.”

He also acknowledged the unwavering support of his family: “To my family, thank you for every sacrifice, every mile travelled and every moment of encouragement. None of this would have been possible without you.”

Milner concluded his statement with a note of gratitude and pride: “I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey.”

Over the course of his senior career, Milner made 696 appearances across club and international football, scoring a total of 87 goals. His professionalism, adaptability, and longevity have earned him immense respect throughout the footballing world.
