The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off on June 11 and run until July 19, featuring a record 48 teams competing across multiple venues, making it the largest World Cup in history.
The matches will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Deputy Mayor of Palangka Raya, Achmad Zaini, expressed his excitement for the upcoming tournament, which is just around the corner.
According to him, the world’s biggest football event is a moment eagerly awaited by fans to witness top-level matches featuring the best footballers from around the globe.
“We should be grateful. This year, God willing, we can once again follow the World Cup matches. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy the tournament. I myself am a football fan,” Zaini said after attending a joint ceremony marking Pancasila Day at the Palangka Raya City Hall on Monday (1 June 2026).
He also expressed hope that the festive atmosphere of the 2026 World Cup would be felt by the people of Palangka Raya.
One of the ways to achieve that, he said, is through public viewing events, which can bring the community together to enjoy the matches.
“Hopefully, we can watch together. We also hope the city will organize community viewing events. I will talk to the Mayor of Palangka Raya about this,” he added.
When asked about his favourite players, Zaini admitted that he still admires the senior stars who have long been icons of world football.
The names Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi remain the first that come to his mind when discussing international football.
“Yes, my favourite players are still the veterans, like Messi and Ronaldo,” he said with a smile.
Nonetheless, he hopes that the 2026 World Cup will not only showcase the established stars but also serve as a platform for emerging talents to shine on the global stage.
He pointed out that one of the main appeals of the World Cup is seeing young players make impressive debuts and later grow into global football stars.
“There will be many great players, of course. We hope that this World Cup will bring out world-class talent. Usually, it’s through the World Cup that new stars are discovered,” he noted.
Zaini also emphasised the importance of continuous player regeneration so that global football remains exciting and engaging for fans worldwide.
He believes it’s time for a new generation to step forward and carry on the legacy of the senior international players.
