Premier League title-winning manager Arne Slot expressed that the bond he shares with Liverpool and its supporters “goes beyond football” after his departure from the club.
The Dutch coach was relieved of his duties at Anfield on Saturday, exactly a year after guiding Liverpool to their second league crown in 35 years. His exit followed a disappointing campaign that ended with the Reds finishing fifth in the Premier League.
In an open letter published in the Liverpool Echo, Slot described winning the Premier League title as “beyond special”.
He wrote, “The connection we share goes beyond football, beyond those magical European nights under the Anfield lights or the sound of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ echoing from The Kop. From the very beginning, you made me feel at home and guided me along the way. That is something I will always treasure.”
Slot reflected that the league triumph was “even more meaningful” because fans could join in the celebrations, unlike during the 2020 title win that took place amid the pandemic.
He also recalled the “shocking” incident in which 134 supporters were injured after Paul Doyle drove into crowds on Water Street during those celebrations. Doyle was later sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison after admitting to 31 offences.
“I was privileged to witness firsthand your compassion and unity,” Slot wrote. “That spirit has sustained this city through many difficult times, and I hope it continues to drive the pursuit of justice and accountability so many have long fought for.”
The manager further spoke about the “love, compassion, and support shown by the Liverpool family” following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident, calling it “extraordinary”. He said the way fans honoured Jota’s memory would remain with him forever.
Along with expressing gratitude to supporters, Slot extended his thanks to the players, staff, and ownership group at Liverpool.
“It has been a privilege working alongside all of you,” he said. “Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to everyone connected with this club and will forever be a proud chapter in its rich history.”
He added, “I leave with full faith in what’s to come. The players who have given everything for this club, who have upheld its values and created countless unforgettable memories, have laid foundations that will endure. At the same time, a new generation is emerging – ready to write its own story and carry the responsibility of wearing this shirt.”
Concluding his message, Slot wrote, “Change is part of football, but I have no doubt that this club will continue to make its people proud.”
