Just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Germany secured a comfortable 4-0 victory over Finland in an international friendly on Saturday evening. Deniz Undav struck twice, while Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala added one goal each to seal the win for Julian Nagelsmann’s men.
The Mewa Arena in Mainz witnessed early dominance from Germany, who took control of proceedings right from the start. In the eighth minute, Nathaniel Brown combined well with Florian Wirtz down the left flank to find Deniz Undav, whose attempt was pushed over the bar by former Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.
As the first half progressed, Jamal Musiala set up Stuttgart forward Undav again near the half-hour mark, but Hradecky once more came to Finland’s rescue. The visitors also had a chance when Leo Walta’s long-range strike was blocked by Joshua Kimmich.
Germany’s breakthrough finally arrived when Undav made no mistake on his third attempt. Lennart Karl linked up with his club teammate Kimmich, who delivered a pinpoint cross that Undav steered into the bottom left corner — a well-deserved lead after a dominant opening half.
Three minutes after the restart, Undav turned provider to set up Germany’s second. Finland’s Adam Markhiyev, who plays for 1.FC Nürnberg, lost possession to the 29-year-old forward, who then unselfishly squared the ball to Florian Wirtz for a simple finish.
Germany added a third just before the hour mark. Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha intercepted a Finnish pass, allowing Lennart Karl to carry the ball forward from midfield. The youngster then found Undav in space, who calmly slotted past Hradecky for his second goal of the night.
The loudest cheer of the evening came about 27 minutes before full-time when Jamal Musiala found the net. After Karl was trapped in the corner, Alexander Pavlović rescued the move and sent in a precise cross, which Musiala smashed home from 16 metres. Soon after, Karl was substituted for Leroy Sane.
Late in the game, local favourite Nadiem Amiri received a warm reception as he came off the bench. Nick Woltemade also featured in the closing minutes but failed to make a significant impact. Nonetheless, the four-time world champions will take great confidence from this convincing win as they prepare to face the United States in their next friendly on Saturday.
