Portugal’s Rising Star Rodrigo Mora: The Young FC Porto No.10 Tipped for World Cup Glory

FC Porto's attacking prodigy Rodrigo Mora embodies the traditional European No.10 and is featured in this month's edition of 'The Boy's A Bit Special'.

When 5ft 6in Rodrigo Mora netted his first goal for FC Porto on his senior debut at just 17, his teammate, the towering 6ft 4in Samu Aghehowa, lifted him high in celebration like a puppet on strings.

Physical stature plays a significant role in Mora’s game – and it’s a central theme in this feature as well.

We’ve often heard stories of talented players who were overlooked because of their small frame or lack of physical dominance. However, Mora’s extraordinary skill set has allowed him to shine without needing to rely heavily on physicality.

From a very young age, Mora has outperformed his peers with his technical brilliance and vision for creating chances.

This has been evident across his youth international career, where he has excelled for Portugal at Under-15, U16, U17 and now U21 levels, having skipped multiple age groups following an outstanding debut season at senior level.

FourFourTwo’s long-running feature 'The Boy's A Bit Special' has been a hallmark since the magazine’s inception, spotlighting the brightest young footballers from the UK and around the world.

Since September 2025, the feature has been revamped, with youth football expert Joe Donnohue profiling four teenagers each month and analysing what makes them truly special.

Mora’s standout performance at the 2024 UEFA Under-17 European Championship earned him the prestigious Golden Ball. He scored five goals and provided two assists, guiding Portugal all the way to the final, where they fell short against Italy.

In the preceding season, Mora finished as joint-top scorer in the UEFA Youth League, scoring seven goals as Porto were eliminated on penalties in the semi-final.

Last season, the young forward reached double digits for Porto’s senior team, which led to a call-up from Roberto Martinez to Portugal’s senior squad for the UEFA Nations League Finals during the summer.

If he maintains this form throughout the 2025/26 season, Mora could very well earn a spot in Portugal’s World Cup squad.

In many respects, Mora is reminiscent of the classic European No.10 – compact, elusive, with his trademark flowing auburn hair, operating between the lines and gliding past defenders. If any footballer could literally dribble through an opponent’s legs, Mora would be that player.

Composure and balance define his play in the final third. Mora thrives in attacking areas and quickly became a key link in Porto’s offensive structure. In high-pressure zones, the 18-year-old showcases complete confidence and creativity.

With his youthful appearance, sharp ball control in tight situations, ambidextrous ability, and style reminiscent of Manchester City legend David Silva, Mora is, as they say in Portuguese, a true ‘craque’ – a special talent.
