On Saturday (30 May) afternoon, a fierce dust storm suddenly hit Bikaner city of Rajasthan and engulfed the entire city. Within minutes, huge dust clouds raised by strong winds covered the city with a layer of thick yellow-brown smoke, reducing visibility and severely affecting normal life.
The storm was so intense that it created a dark atmosphere even during the day. In many areas of the city, people saw scenes that they compared to a disaster, or a holocaust-like situation. In the video that has gone viral on social media, it can be seen that a huge wall of yellow dust is rapidly moving towards the city and in no time it engulfs buildings, roads and open fields.
Due to the dust storm, the skyline of the city which is the identity of Bikaner became completely blurred. The sky was covered with dense dusty clouds and the entire city appeared wrapped in a yellow layer. Due to strong winds, people at many places had to take shelter inside homes and shops.
Drivers had to face a lot of difficulties due to suddenly reduced visibility on main roads. Traffic slowed down at many places, while people in some areas stopped their vehicles for safety reasons. There was chaos in residential and commercial areas due to strong winds filled with dust.
The impact of the storm was clearly visible in the markets also. Shopkeepers hastily pulled down the shutters of their shops to protect their goods from dust. Many business establishments temporarily stopped functioning. Pedestrians were seen running here and there in search of safe places. There were also reports of tree branches breaking at some places due to the pressure of strong winds. Apart from this, power supply was also disrupted in some parts of the city, due to which people had to face additional problems.
This dust storm is believed to be part of a wider ongoing unstable weather situation in Rajasthan. During the last 24 hours, rain and thundershowers were recorded in many districts of the state. The maximum rainfall of 58 mm has been recorded in Bari area of Dholpur district.
Jaipur-based Meteorological Center has issued a warning of strong thunderstorm and bad weather in Bikaner, Jaipur, Ajmer, Bharatpur, Kota, Jodhpur and Udaipur divisions. According to the department, wind speed can reach 60 to 70 kilometers per hour in many areas. Heavy rain, hailstorm and lightning may also occur at some places.
The weather department has advised people to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather and follow the guidelines issued by the local administration. According to the forecast, afternoon thunderstorm and rain activities may continue in many parts of Rajasthan for the next four to five days, due to which there is a possibility of further increase in weather disturbances.
